Gary was running around taking care of everything, and Teresa thanked him for all his help.
“Hey, we’re family. No need to thank me. It’s really nothing,” Gary said with a grin. He paused for a moment, and then asked, “So, when is Jennifer’s trial?”
“The beginning of next month,” Teresa replied.
“That’s pretty quick,” Gary remarked. He didn’t press further, just sighed. “At least she won’t have that hanging over her head anymore.”
“No,” Teresa responded.
Gary then said that since there wasn’t much left for him to do, he’d take Michael out for a bit. It was getting late, and Crown Plaza was always lively at night. Teresa agreed.
Back in her room, Teresa was sorting through her luggage. She’d brought along the bracelet Hayden gave her. Every time she thought about how the once–chatty Hayden was now struggling with dementia, her heart twisted with sadness.
With this illness, there was always the chance that the next time she saw him, he wouldn’t even know who she was. It was a cruel disease, not just for the one suffering, but for everyone who loved them.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Evelyn, and her voice was full of panic. “Teresa, what’s going on with Lucas? I’ve been trying to reach him for days, and I can’t get through. Is he in Nareigh? Did something happen?”
Teresa tried to calm her down. Lucas hadn’t come back ever since he left for Risemon World Studios. She’d tried calling him, but couldn’t get through at
all.
Just as Teresa had a sinking feeling in her gut, a bunch of photos suddenly showed up on her phone.
The photos showed Lucas tied up with ropes, getting the crap beaten out of him by several men. His face was swollen and battered, covered in bruises, and blood streamed from his forehead, running down his pale cheeks.
Teresa was completely stunned. With her hands shaking, she frantically dialed the number back. On the other end, a woman’s gloating laughter burst through the phone, wild and unrestrained.
“I knew you wouldn’t be able to just sit there and not call me. So, how does it feel seeing your brother beaten to a pulp like that? Hurts, doesn’t it?” the woman taunted, her voice full of twisted satisfaction.
“Yalena! What did you do to Lucas?” Teresa shouted, her voice trembling with fury.
“Oh, you’re curious? Then listen up. I’ll take my time and tell you every little thing I’ve done to him.” Yalena drawled, her tone oozing with malice.
Just then, a car horn blared, and Teresa whipped her head around. From where she stood, she immediately spotted Yalena’s car parked right outside the hospital entrance.
Yalena rolled down the window and waved at feresa in a taunting gesture, a smug grin plastered on her face.
Teresa bolted out of the room. No one could hold her back, no matter how hard the doctors and nurses tried. She stormed outside, marched right up to the driver’s side window, and shouted, “Yalena, get the hell out of the car!”

Her fingers were trembling uncontrollably with rage. At the same time, a dull ache started to throb in her belly. But Yalena didn’t get out of the car.

She simply rolled down the window and sat there, calmly watching Teresa’s labored, angry breaths, the fury burning in her eyes, and her heavy, almost swaying pregnant belly.
Yalena could tell that the baby in Teresa’s belly was now hanging by a thread.
