Shirley’s eyes flickered, her gaze at Sean carrying a warning.
Sean remained utterly unfazed.
He leisurely approached the hospital bed, leaned down to scrutinize Shirley’s face, his expression growing complex.
“How did you end up in such a state?
He promised to leave with you, yet abandoned you like this. If that’s the case, you’d be better off with me. At least I have one advantage over him–no children, no attachments.”
The elder Williamses looked up in shock, their faces unable to conceal their disdain for Shirley.
Alexander clenched his fist, about to step forward and pull Sean away, but Mr. Williams blocked his path.
“Worthless fool!”
He glared at Alexander, hand raised to strike, only to have Shirley intercept the blow.
The sharp sound of the slap echoed through the ward, instantly making Marleigh burst into terrified wails.
Chaos erupted instantly.
Mr. Williams had no choice but to relent. Before leaving, he jabbed a finger at Alexander’s face: “If you dare elope with that used goods, consider yourself dead to the Williams family!
Your mother and I will mourn you as if you’re gone!”
With that, the elder Williamses stormed out of the ward, clutching the sobbing Marleigh.
“Did it hurt?”
Alexander pulled the tearful Shirley into his embrace, his voice full of concern.
“Why didn’t you tell me about these things sooner?”
Rita shook her head, eyes glistening. “I wanted Marleigh to have a whole family. I could endure her insults… but this time she went too far!
To drive us apart, she framed an innocent child!”
“Alexander, I can’t compete with her. She exploits your love to do as she pleases, but Marleigh and I… we have no one. I’m so tired. Maybe… we should divorce.”
“You don’t need to compete with her, Rita. You’re my lawfully wedded Mrs. Williams. Marleigh is our daughter…”

Alexander gently wiped her tears. “Her body is damaged. She can never have children again. So rest assured–no one can take what belongs to you.”
So… he knew everything!
Yet to comfort Rita, he’d ruthlessly ripped open Rita’s deepest wound.
Rita’s eyes reddened. Her long–dormant heart now ached with excruciating pain.
Rita hid her triumph behind teary eyes, choking out: “I believe you, Alexander. Come see Marleigh with me? She must be terrified.”
Alexander agreed.
At the doorway, Rita called out to him.
Impatience written all over his face, Alexander snapped: “Enough, Rita!
Save your apologies. I won’t hear another word. Those filthy schemes you’ve been weaving–I’ve no time for your ex- cuses now. Reflect on your actions these next days. Until you admit your wrongdoing, I won’t visit.”
Rita schooled her expression, lightly tossing the car keys from the nightstand toward him.
Alexander stared at the keys in his hand, then at her indifferent face. His heart plummeted.
His gaze shifted: “Rita… you truly disappoint me now.”
Without another glance, he walked out arm–in–arm with Rita.
Rita turned her eyes calmly toward Sean, who wore an expression of pure amusement.
“Mr. Jackson. Enjoy the show? Care to leave now?”
Sean Jackson seemed not to hear her. He bent down, fingertips grazing the wound at her temple. “Get the picture now? Why not consider me instead?”
Shirley yanked his collar forward, enunciating each syllable: “No. Way.”
Sean’s eyes darkened. He pressed hard on her injury, making her wince in pain. As she struggled to slap his hand. away, he pinned her shoulders back onto the bed.
“Shirley, when did you become so disgusting?” He leaned closer, knee wedged between her thighs, his vicious. “If he can have you, why can’t I—”
Ring!
The sudden phone call cut him off. Sean glanced at the screen and walked out.
gaze turning
“Sean, thanks for exposing everything to Alexander’s parents. Now they see Shirley for who she really is. Alexander won’t leave easily now.”

Rita chuckled dismissively: “Relax, she won’t play dead. Why so protective? Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for her?”
“Rita,” Sean crushed his cigarette, voice icy. “When you wanted into the Williams family, I pursued Rita Hall- Alexander’s arranged marriage partner. Now you want his love back? I dragged Rita across continents for you. You know exactly who owns my heart.” His laugh held no warmth. “But a broken–winged sparrow? Taming her is boring. Don’t overplay your hand.”
