Adam walked straight up to me without even acknowledging Matteo’s greeting and gave a slight nod. “Ms. Akre, we just picked up an odd signal from your phone.”
I nodded back and handed him my phone.

Adam took it and gave it a close look, then his face turned serious. “The damage is pretty bad. Just fixing it and getting the parts would cost around 10 million dollars.”
He didn’t raise his voice, but his words hit like a ton of bricks.
Annie turned pale, her lips shaking. “N–No way! Who’s ever heard of a phone costing that much to fix?”
“This is a global limited–edition custom model. The built–in chip and encryption technology are worth far more than ordinary flagship phones. It’s currently valued at 20 million dollars on the market, and you can’t even buy it with money.”
Adam gave her a sharp, icy look and pulled a document out of his briefcase.
“Ms. Akre, this is the phone’s appraisal report and purchase agreement. Should I read it out loud for everyone?”
I waved a hand.
“No need. I think everyone here already heard just fine.

The conference room went completely silent.

The CFO’s glasses had slipped down to the tip of his nose, and he didn’t even notice.
The Marketing Director just sat there with his mouth open, like a fish out of water gasping for air.
As for Annie, she practically sank into her chair, sweat dripping down her forehead.
Matteo finally snapped of it.

“Isabelle, you… Who are you?”
I didn’t answer him right away. Instead, I turned to look at Annie.
“Ms. Norman, shouldn’t we talk about compensation now?”
Annie shot up from her seat and yelled, “You’re all in on this together! This is just a setup to scare me into paying! There’s no way this phone is really worth 20 million dollars!”
Adam frowned and gave a quick signal to the bodyguards behind him.
Two of them moved in fast and grabbed Annie’s arms, one on each side.
“Ms. Norman, if you have any doubts, you’re free to take this to court anytime,” Adam said, his voice completely flat and calm.
“And with Ashcroft Global’s legal team of 3,865 lawyers, we’ll be seeing it through to the very end.”
Annie went from pale to ashen in seconds, sweat pouring down her forehead.
Everyone knew how tough Ashcroft Global’s legal team was.

Forget someone like her–even if the whole Karridge Group backed her up, it wouldn’t be enough for Ashcroft Global to even snack on.
Her voice shaking, she begged, “Mr. Karridge… Mr. Karridge, please help me!”
Matteo took a deep breath and stepped in front of Annie. His voice was calm again, like his old self. “Mr. Gibson, there may have been a misunderstanding. I’ll take responsibility for Ms. Norman’s
compensation.”
Adam didn’t say anything right away. Instead, he looked over at me.
I gave a small nod. Only then did he put the papers away and tell Matteo, “Since Mr. Karridge has spoken, Ashcroft Global will give you three days to handle it.”

The conference room door closed quietly, but it felt like a soft thunderclap hitting everyone at once.
I glanced at Matteo and Annie, and a slight smirk tugged at my lips. “Mr. Karridge, don’t you need the board’s approval before spending 20 million dollars out of nowhere?”
Before Matteo could say anything, Annie suddenly stepped out from behind him. The fear on her face was gone, replaced by a strange kind of pride.
“Isabelle, have you forgotten?
“You’ve already been fired! What the company does is none of your business!”
Her words were like a spark that lit the tension in the room again.
