Jonathan’s heart twisted as he watched Mike rub his eyes and cry. That was the last thing he ever wanted to see. He never wanted to affect an innocent child like that.
“Mike, listen to me. How could I ever not want you guys? I just have some work to take care of back home,” Jonathan said.
“You’re lying!” Michael was a sharp kid, way quicker on the uptake than most kids his age. “How could you be working this late at night?”
Michael’s pleas and the way he looked at Jonathan, so reluctant to let go, were tearing Jonathan apart inside. Jonathan hugged Michael, gently stroked his hair, and whispered a few words in his ear.
But Michael just grabbed Jonathan’s arm even tighter, crying, “No, Dad, don’t go!”
“I’m not going anywhere. Be a good boy,” Jonathan said. Even though it broke his heart to part with his son, he still walked Michael back upstairs.
Teresa had just finished her shower when Evelyn rushed over to tell her that Michael had run after Jonathan. Teresa froze for a second, then dashed out in her pajamas, but by the time she got outside, Mike was already back.
“Mom…” Michael saw Teresa, walked over, and hugged her, looking all pitiful and needy.
Teresa knelt down, wiped his tears, and hurriedly asked, “What’s wrong? Why are you crying like this?”
“Mom, Mr. Lime said he’s going abroad. He said he won’t be back until New Year’s Day!” Michael blurted out.
Teresa’s heart skipped a beat. ‘Is he really leaving? Is it just a work trip, or is he not coming back at all?‘ she thought anxiously. ‘Saying he’ll be back for New Year’s Day, can I really believe that? Is he just telling Mike a comforting lie?‘
“Where’s your dad? Did he leave already?” Teresa asked anxiously. Michael nodded.
Teresa wanted to take Mike to find Jonathan. ‘What does he really mean? Where is he actually going? I have to get some answers from him,‘ she thought anxiously.
“Get back here,” Evelyn called out from the doorway. She’d overheard everything and stopped Teresa. “Wherever he’s going, it’s got nothing to do with you anymore. You’re just his ex–wife now. Chasing after him like this just isn’t right.”
“I just want to ask himn a couple of things,” Teresa said.

“There’s no need to ask. I never taught you to throw yourself at a man like that. Don’t you get it? That’s exactly why his mom always looks down on you. Show some backbone, will you?” Evelyn snapped.
Teresa clenched her fists and fell silent. She thought, ‘Yeah, what if his mom is there when I go over? If I run into Irene now, wouldn’t I just be humiliating myself?‘
Michael tugged at Teresa’s sleeve. “Mom, are we still going to look for Mr. Lime?”
“Let’s go look for him another day. It’s getting late. Let’s go inside,” Teresa said. She led Michael back into the house. Both kids were home at that moment.
Evelyn closed the door and followed Teresa into the room. “Now that the kids are back, just let things be. If he’s got a conscience, he’ll pay child support. If he doesn’t, then forget it. We don’t need his money anyway.
“You’ve got your own company now. As long as you’re careful with your spending, you can raise the kids just fine.”
“Can you just leave? I need some time alone,” Teresa said, her voice weary. She sat on the bed, then lay down, utterly exhausted in both body and mind.
After driving back, Jonathan walked in and saw Fiona sitting on the living room couch.
“You’re back just in time, Jonathan. Come here for a sec,” Fiona said seriously, handing him his phone. He’d left it behind because he was in such a hurry earlier. There was a follow–up call from the police department showing up on the screen.
“I saw the call was from the police, so I answered. They said Jennifer doesn’t want to appeal. What’s going on? Did Jennifer get in trouble with the law or something?” Fiona asked.
Jonathan sat down on the couch, rubbing his temples, saying nothing.
Fiona wasn’t someone you could fool that easily. “No wonder I couldn’t reach Jennifer. I’ve
been calling and calling, but she never picks up.
