“Where did your mom go? That girl said she was going to visit Lucas. We’ll just wait for her to come back,” Evelyn replied.
“Evelyn, I’m just going to check on Felix in my room,” Michael said, dashing back to his room with his kiddie phone in hand.
When Teresa arrived at the hospital, Donald was still there, his leg in a cast and hanging in a sling. He struggled to get out of bed and told Teresa he’d gone to see Jennifer just yesterday.
“What did she say? And what really happened with the accident on your way there?” Teresa asked.
Donald finally explained, “On the day of Jennifer’s trial, Teresa called and told me to just take her car since it was nearby, so I went.
“But on the way, I got distracted, pulled out my phone to make a call while driving, and wasn’t paying attention.
“That’s when I crashed into a black sedan. Luckily, I managed to swerve just in time, so the car didn’t roll over.
“That’s why I missed the court hearing. When I finally woke up, I was already in the hospital,” Donald said.
Teresa finally understood. So, that was what happened.
“Gary and I thought you just overslept. How could you miss such an important day and not show up?” Teresa said.
“I never wanted things to turn out this way. I’ve even been dreaming about Jennifer’s trial. I’ll be here waiting for her when she gets out,” Donald said.
“Whether you wait for her or not, that’s your business. Let me ask you. When you said you got distracted and made a call, was it to Evelyn?” Teresa pressed.
When Donald didn’t deny it, Teresa stared at him in disbelief. “Why did you call my mom about this? Did you do it on purpose?”
Donald’s eyes flickered with a complicated emotion, but he quickly pushed it down. “I just thought Evelyn had a right to know. She may not be Jennifer’s real mom, but I know she treats Jennifer like her own daughter.”
“Did you even think about the consequences? Evelyn’s blood pressure has never been good, and she gets worked up so easily. You know telling her wouldn’t help. Why did you have to tell

“I honestly didn’t think that far ahead. I’m really sorry, Teresa,” Donald said.

Teresa was at a loss for words. “Whatever. Just bring my car back when it’s fixed.” With that, she turned and walked away.
She couldn’t help but feel angry, and her impression of Donald had definitely soured. As she was heading downstairs, she just happened to bump into Jonathan coming up.
Teresa hadn’t expected to see Jonathan there, but when she spotted him, she walked over to him. “Why are you here? Mike told me you were going abroad. Is that true?”
Jonathan didn’t answer her question. Instead, he just looked Teresa over from head to toe. “Mike called me and mentioned something about a car accident. What’s going on?”
“Donald crashed my car. I lent it to him, and he got into an accident on the day of my sister’s trial. Do you know why?” Teresa pressed.
Teresa was already fuming, so she didn’t bother sugarcoating things with Jonathan. “He called my mom while he was on the way and told her to come over. I have no idea why he has to keep meddling in our business.
“Did he do it on purpose? I don’t even know why he’s always the one messing things up from behind the scenes. Whatever, I’m just done.”
Jonathan narrowed his eyes, with his gaze turning cold. ‘It was Donald? Seriously?‘ Jonathan thought to himself.
“I’m leaving,” Teresa said, her expression cold as she turned and walked away from Jonathan. He didn’t go after her…he simply headed upstairs.
Donald was in his room, setting down his crutch and about to get some rest, when suddenly, a hand grabbed him and yanked him off the bed.
He was caught off guard and hit the floor hard. Before he could even react, a punch smashed straight into his face.
Donald’s face was knocked to the side as he took both of Jonathan’s punches head–on.
