“Four packs and an endangered air species,” Clifford’s words brought me out of my thoughts. “In two months and two weeks.”
He did that? Clifford?
“I see,” Alexander said, nodding his head slowly. “Would you consider attacking Batwephir tonight? I need a few to take out a certain Vampire king.”
That’s it. He just needed more men to take out more Kingdoms!
I turned to Alexander, “If you won’t give him back his people don’t use him for your entertainment.” I whispered harshly at him.
Alexander glanced at me, one eyebrow raised and a tiny smirk forming across his lips. Like he was seeing it as a dare.
“Shift,” he commanded without looking back.
My heart skipped a beat and my eyes went wide. “Wait, what?”
Was he talking to me? Asking me to shift when he knows I can’t?
I tightened my fist on my lap, anger burning my chest. How could he-
A loud groan filled the chamber, dragging my attention away from Alexander.
I looked back to see Clifford. His body was cracking, twisting and reshaping. His breath tore from his throat, deepening, thickening, until fur burst across his skin.
White as snow. And at the tips of that endless coat were streaks of red that matched his red eyes. He rose higher and higher until he towered, paws thudding against the floor, sharp claws dragging lines into it.
I was speechless.
The sheer size of him… he was larger than any wolf I’d seen. Larger even than most of Alexander’s men. Larger than Lycans I’ve seen. If his father wasn’t a wolf, I would have thought he was a lycan.
Whispers filled the chamber, a hiss of awe and disbelief.
Alexander leaned forward, his stare narrowing, his eyes squinting. He muttered something,

but I couldn’t hear him, or rather, I wasn’t paying attention.

Just looking at Clifford’s wolf made my breathing seize. He was… terrifying, yet beautiful.
The weight of Clifford’s wolf still lingered in the air, his breath grew heavy, as he finally shifted back, kneeling bare and unashamed in front of Alexander.
Alexander’s voice cut through the silence. “You want your pack back.”
Clifford’s chest heaved. “Yes.”
“Then first you’ll serve the owner of the pack.” Alexander’s tone was sharp enough to cut.
“Please don’t be a slave. Please don’t be a slave.” I prayed silently.
Clifford bowed his head mid–way but Alexander stopped him.
“Not me. You’ll serve her.”
My stomach lurched. Heat pricked my chest as Alexander’s finger pointed—at me. “Our Luna.”
The chamber stilled. Heat flared through my chest, confusion burning up my throat.
Me? I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak–why would he put me in this?
The chamber erupted at once. Elders stood, their robes snapping as they shouted over one another.
“The Luna?” one of the Elders scoffed. “Primus Alexander, there are Elders in line waiting to own a pack.”
“She can’t even command her own shadow! How would she command those weaklings?‘ another barked. “She’s a woman. How can a woman be a leader?”

Laughter broke out across the table, harsh and cruel. It wasn’t just Clifford they mocked–it was me. Their jeers crawled beneath my skin, making my hands shake.
Clifford’s jaw twitched, angry flashing in his eyes. My heart clenched. This wasn’t right.
“This responsibility is more than just discussing with Kings and providing food and stocks. It’s more than exposing a-‘

“Enough.” The word ripped from me before I could stop it. Heat climbed my neck; my nails dug into my palms.
The last thing I needed was to be insulted by them.

Their voices died down and the Elder who spoke gave a fake cough, that sounded like he was nervous. He cleared his throat and looked away.
“Do you want reasons? Look at the silence of the bond she’s already forged here.” His gaze swept the room, daring anyone to contradict him. “If you still go against her then I won’t be responsible for what she chooses to do with you.”
My stomach twisted. Why does he have to put it like that? As if I’m a tyrant.
Why would he put me in charge of my old pack to rule?
Alexander leaned forward, eyes cutting back to Clifford. “So, boy. For two years, you will serve her as you would me. You pledge loyalty to your Luna, not with words, but with action. You kill if she commands it. You die if she demands it. And if, in two years, you’ve proven a worthy
slave-”
“No.” I cut him off.
There is absolutely no way I’d let Clifford be my slave. He doesn’t deserve it. “You know that thing is more than enough to pay their debt. You’re just keeping him here to build your army.”
Alexander shot me a glare and sneered, “You better shut up.”
That made me shut up and return my gaze to Clifford. I tried to steady my breathing despite my anger bubbling in my chest.
I couldn’t quite catch Clifford’s reaction but I could see his fist tightening slightly. I didn’t know what to do, what to say. Or how to help him without Alexander getting angry.
Alexander’s voice echoed again. “Kneel, and swear it. Or walk out and lose everything.”
Silence pooled. No one moved. A chair creaked. Clifford’s throat worked; his fists opened and closed. Alexander watched him like a blade waiting to fall.
Slowly, Clifford lowered himself. Till one knee touched the floor.
“To you,” he said hoarsely, eyes lifting to mine, “I pledge myself–my strength and my loyalty -for two years.”
I felt something flow through my veins. Like a spark of lightning that made my wolf stir.
Alexander leaned back, satisfied, the faintest smirk curving his lips. “Good. Then it’s settled. You start immediately. Everyone out.”
Why me? Why would he hand me this power in front of them all?
The Elders were furious, eyes throwing daggers at me as they left. An Alpha’s son was now

And me… I was trapped in the middle, given a pack I never asked for and given more reasons for the Elders to despise me.
And yet, I could feel everything would get worse by the day.
A hand clamped around my arm, pulling me back with soo much force that I almost tripped.
Alexander’s voice was icy and sharp enough to make my knees tremble. “What the fuck was that foolish behaviour?”
