Chapter 33
I hadn’t seen Jaxson all week.
David had asked me to take Caroline to the research conference–Jaxson’s suggestion, I knew.
I wasn’t surprised.
That day, I texted Caroline from my work phone, telling her to get ready.
She replied, “No Problem.”
I walked out of the hospital, waiting for her. Shortly after, a message:“Sorry, Dr. Sutton, you go ahead first. Jaxson will send me later.”
I glanced at the message. A cold smile touched my lips. I replied, “okay,” and turned off my phone.
I drove to Coral Tower. As I got out of the car, I bumped into Jaxson’s. Caroline emerged from the passenger seat, all dressed up, wearing delicate makeup. Jaxson didn’t get out until later, dressed casually, the serious look gone. The man spending time with his first love…different. He’d been with Caroline all week, hadn’t he?
I averted my gaze, pushing down the strange feeling in my chest, and walked past them into the building.
In the lobby, I ran into an acquaintance–Reynald Steward, a family friend of Professor Kendall’s. I’d met him before.
“Charlotte?” He walked towards me, his usual mischievous smile in place.“What a coincidence, are you here for the meeting too?”
I nodded.“Yes.”
“How have you been recently?”
I smiled.“Pretty good. How about you and Professor Kendall?”
“I’m okay, but James misses you.”
“Dr. Sutton, why didn’t you wait for me?”
Caroline approached.
I turned, seeing Jaxson behind her.
Before I could react, Caroline looked at Reynald, then at me, blinking and smiling.“Dr. Sutton, is this your boyfriend?”
Jaxson’s gaze swept over me, landing on Reynald. His eyes darkened slightly.“Mr. Steward has a girlfriend?”
Reynald was stunned.“Girlfriend?”
