Chapter 2

I asked him what it was.

He hesitated and said, “A lady asked me to give this to you. She said you’re almost menopausal. You’re an old woman with a bad temper due to menopause, and she doesn’t want to argue with you.

“Inside is a liquid menopause supplement.

“But you look only around 30.”

I calmly told him to throw away the things Mandy had used to provoke me, then closed the door.

I took out the divorce agreement and carefully signed my name.

My phone vibrated a few times. It was a message from the hospital’s personnel director.

“Ms. Hackett, could you reconsider? It doesn’t matter about the others, but how can you send Dr. Gibson and Mandy to Africa?

“I know you’re in a bad mood after losing your children and are having a falling-out with Dr. Gibson. But please sepa- rate personal feelings from work and don’t use such dirty tactics. You’re not just ruining two promising talents this way. How many patients will lose their chance to survive because of this?”

I replied flatly, “You have a point. I forgot to deal with you. You’re fired. I’ll have someone else take over your work.”

After that, I called the third-party management team right away and told them to take over all the personnel and logis- tics work at my hospital.

“Anyone who tries to speak up for Theodore and Mandy gets shipped off to Africa. If they don’t agree, make them pay back the training fees we originally invested in them.”

I gently ran my hand over the children’s urn, speaking each word slowly and clearly.

All those doctors who supported Mandy in the comments were poor students whom I had personally funded.

I was the one who gave them chances, who sent them abroad to study.

And in the end, all they knew was to kiss up to Theodore.

They’ve forgotten who helped them become the doctors they are today.

No wonder they follow him blindly. They’re all ungrateful, just the same inside.

Ungrateful people wouldn’t be good doctors.

They needed to go through some real hardship to finally understand what it truly meant to have a kind heart.

After I hung up, I saw that Theodore had called me more than a dozen times in a row.

In the end, probably furious and out of options, he even sent me another friend request with the message. “Pick up the phone.”

Just then, my phone rang again.

I answered.

As soon as I said hello, he started yelling at me.

“Are you out of your mind? I’m about to go through my professional review, and Mandy is just about to become a full-time employee. How could you report us for a transfer to Africa?

“Luna Hackett, I know you’re hurting because the kids are gone, but that’s just how things turned out!

“Our kids were born with serious conditions. Even the best doctors couldn’t have saved them. It was just their time. It wasn’t me, and it sure as hell wasn’t Mandy who did anything to them!

“I’ve told you a million times, yet you still keep picking on Mandy. The reason I didn’t let you check the security footage was that I didn’t want you to lose it again. I never imagined you’d start spreading nasty rumors about her, let alone use your power to get back at her by sending her to Africa!”

His usually calm and distant voice was now shaking with anger.

I simply asked, “When you rushed out earlier, was it really because of that emergency surgery? And when Mandy posted that Instagram story, did it really happen because some patient’s family got drunk and made you play that game?

“Or maybe you left in such a hurry just so you could take your favorite student to Disneyland?”

On the other end, his breathing suddenly stopped.

There was a two-second silence.

“What are you even talking about? That’s not true at all. You’re really losing it.”

Then I heard Mandy’s voice.

“Dr. Gibson, the fireworks are about to start. It’s not every day you come out to relax. I don’t want my problems to ruin your mood. When we get back, I’ll personally apologize to Mrs. Gibson. Even if I have to kneel, I’ll do it.”

The line went dead right after.

He probably didn’t want to miss the pretty fireworks, huh?

I held the children’s urn close, tears streaming down my face.

“I will never let them get away with this.”
