Chapter 6

Mandy’s eyes were red as she said through her sobs, “Ms. Hackett, I hope you’ll stop spreading rumors about me and won’t send me to Africa. I’m my parents’ only daughter.”

The comment section was flooded with messages from patients’ families, all begging me to come out and apologize.

“My dad’s condition really can’t wait for surgery anymore. If he doesn’t get it, he’s going to die.”

“Please, Ms. Hackett, just say you’re sorry. I’ll get down on my knees if I have to. Only Dr. Gibson can save my daughter.”

I held my phone tightly, and my heart finally broke into pieces.

Theodore called, his voice full of warning. “Luna, you don’t want your reputation to be ruined and the hospital falling apart because of you, right?”

I screamed, my voice breaking. “You bastard! Theodore, you freaking bastard!

“Didn’t I give them a choice? The contract clearly said, either go to the branch hospital for three years of support, or pay the penalty for breaking the contract! They agreed to this themselves! So, just because they don’t want to follow through, they are joining you in a strike? You killed my kids, and that’s not enough for you? Now you want more peo- ple to die? How do you still call yourself a doctor? How do you even call yourself a human being?”

It was the first time I’d ever cursed him like that, and it actually left Theodore speechless for a few seconds.

But then he snapped back, clearly annoyed.

“You’re seriously insane! I told you already, the kids’ deaths were just bad luck! No one killed them! It’s all in your head!

“If you don’t want those patients to die, then just hurry up and apologize already! Say you were hallucinating, that you misunderstood me and Mandy, that everything you said about us was made up, and take back the African aid list. Then we’ll start performing surgeries again.

“And while you’re at it, admit that you’re mentally ill and need treatment in a hospital. Hand over control of the hospi- tal to me.”

I said viciously, “In your dreams, Theodore! Go to hell and enjoy your fantasy there!

“Everything I’ve done follows the rules. Why should I apologize? Did I force you and Mandy to go to Disneyland? Did I hold you down while you kissed her and touched her chest?

“She gave the wrong dose of anesthesia and killed my son. You covered for her and deleted the surgery footage. You two are monsters, go to hell and answer for what you did to my kids!”

Theodore sucked in a sharp breath. “You’re completely out of your mind… I can’t even talk to you.”

“Go to hell!” I screamed, hurling the phone to the ground and stomping on it over and over.

There was a string of banging sounds at the door.

The next second, a group of people burst in.

“You damn witch! You’re the one messing with those doctors and dragging innocent patients down with you! You bitch, go to hell!”

They ripped at my clothes, slapped me hard across the face, and kicked me in the stomach.

I held onto the urn in my arms like my life depended on it.

But then, someone yanked it right out of my grip.

“No!” I screamed, throwing myself forward, trying to grab it back.

But all I could do was watch as the urn hit the floor and shattered into pieces. My children’s ashes spilled out in an in-

stant.

“You bitch! You care so much about these poor kids? Fine. I’ll scatter their ashes so you can finally understand what real pain feels like for harming others!”

With bloodshot eyes, I lunged at them. But they grabbed me, dragging me back.

Theodore walked in holding Mandy’s hand. When he saw the mess, his first instinct was to protect her.

He looked at me, who was covered in blood, with a mix of emotions on his face, and his voice came out tense.

“Luna, stop being so stubborn! Just apologize, and things will settle down! These are doctors and patients’ families. If you just do what I say, everything will calm down!”

With blood filling my mouth, I screamed, “In your dreams! I’m not letting you off the hook! I’ll make you regret this for the rest of your life!”

Suddenly, the wail of sirens cut through the air, and a group of police stormed in.

“Illegal entry into a private residence and intentional injury-take them all back to the police station!”

The crowd started shouting, “Dr. Gibson, help us!”

Theodore quickly stepped forward. “It’s a misunderstanding. This is just a family issue. I’m the owner, she’s my wife.”

I pushed myself up against the wall and shouted, “He’s not my husband! We’re already divorced!

“I want to sue him for inciting others to break into my home and attack me!

“I’m going to make them all pay!”
