Chapter 10

The state medical board quickly intervened to thoroughly investigate this medical accident that had shocked the entire

nation.

Every detail of how Mandy, relying on Theodore’s affection for her, had caused the deaths of my children, was painstakingly reconstructed.

Her crimes were irrefutable, and those so-called “patient’s family” who came to my house to make trouble that day were nothing more than thugs she had hired.

Even as she was taken away, she was still unwilling to give up, crying and shouting, “Theodore, save me! I did all this for you! You can’t just abandon me!”

Theodore simply stood where he was, his face expressionless, his eyes filled with indifference and deep resentment.

Unfortunately, no matter how thoroughly the investigation team searched, there was no evidence that Theodore had participated in or directed any of Mandy’s actions.

He didn’t even know how our kids had died.

He was, unbelievably, truly innocent.

At most, as the chief surgeon and hospital director, he had failed to thoroughly investigate after such a major incident occurred.

The moment I learned of this conclusion, I didn’t say a word. I just suddenly grabbed the cup on the table and smashed it hard onto the floor.

Glass shards flew everywhere, but my face remained expressionless.

For several days after that, Theodore followed behind me like a homeless stray dog.

His face was haggard, his eyes bloodshot, and he looked as if he wanted to speak but couldn’t find the words.

I never once looked him in the eye.

It wasn’t until I finished my routine inspection of the hospital that day and was about to leave that he suddenly stopped me.

The bodyguards stepped forward, ready to throw him out as usual after giving him a beating.

But he suddenly knelt down, clutching my wrist tightly.

“Luna, give me a chance… Let me finish explaining, and then I’ll go to Africa and never come back.”

I waved my hand to signal the bodyguards to step back, looking at him coldly.

“Go ahead.”

He lowered his head and said in a hoarse voice, “Nothing ever happened between Mandy and me that crossed the line. I… it’s just that whenever I saw her, I would always be reminded of how you looked when you were young.”

“You were so talented back then… But for me, to let me focus on being a doctor, you gave up your own medical ca- reer and started running the hospital instead.”

“I’ve always felt I owed you, so I thought… at least I could make up for that regret by helping Mandy.”

I let out a cold laugh and slapped him hard across the face.

“Make up for it? Spare me your disgusting excuses.”

Theodore’s head was knocked to the side by the slap. After a long moment, he finally looked up and continued, “That day at Disneyland… it really was because of a surgery. The patient’s family gave us the tickets as thanks, and suggest- ed we relax a bit.”

“My mind was blank at the time. The kids had just passed away, and I was trying to escape the pain. At that point, I didn’t know she was the one who killed them. I just didn’t want Mandy to be burdened by the shadow of a medical ac- cident, so I accompanied her at Disneyland for a while and took those photos.”

“I really didn’t know about the Disneyland Instagram post she made. I only knew about the one she posted later. She said she just wanted to make a joke. That kiss was initiated by her. I was just… when I hugged her, she stole a kiss from me.”

“I… I didn’t dare tell you the truth because I was afraid you’d blame her, afraid you’d be even more hurt.”

“I really didn’t know about those things. Mandy said you were so devastated by the children’s deaths that you were having a breakdown, and suggested I take you to a psychiatric hospital. That’s why I thought you should step down

and take some time to recover.”

“But I never expected… one lie after another, and in the end, there was really no way back…”

I slapped him again, my eyes bloodshot and fixed on him with a deadly stare.
