Chapter 2 The Rescue

Beep, beep, beep-

That sharp, mechanical rhythm rang in her cars again

Isla jolted awake from the nightmare, her phone vibrating violently at her side

She glanced at the screen, then coldly cut off the call. A chime followed. It was the plan’s landing announcement

She had arrived

Upon gazing out at the familiar yet foreign scenery, Isla’s lips curved into a frosty smile

Three years passed. After all this time, she was finally back

Finished

Three years ago, her boyfriend had nearly killed her in a car accident. She’d been rushed to the hospital, only to fall into a vegetative state

Her parents, pretending they wanted the best treatment for her, shipped her overseas- essentially abandoning her to die

But fate led her to her mentor, who saved her from that cruel end

No one knew what those three years had cost her

Night after night, she relived that horrific scene. The memory twisted her heart until only hatred remained. She could hardly wait to make her family taste the agony they had once inflicted on her

Now she was back

This was the beginning of her revenge

Wearing sunglasses, Isla stepped out of the airport with a suitcase in hand

Her figure was good, her delicate skin carrying an unhealthy sheen

Scanning the crowd, her gaze landed on a boy holding up a sign with her name. She walked

toward him

Youyou’re Isla? The boy stammered. He hadn’t expected the professor invited by the university to be such a young woman

Yes.Isla lifted her eyes to him briefly, gave a small nod, then started walking

II’m Logan Woods, our mentor’s seventh disciple. He told me to pick you up.”

I know.”

Her tone was clipped, indifferent, as she brushed past him

WaitIsla. Let me give you a ride.Logan hurried after her

But just as Isla reached for the car door, a black luxury sedan lost control, screeching toward them at terrifying speed

Look out.” Without hesitation, Isla shoved the frozen Logan out of the way. Tires screamed

Boom

The sedan flipped, crashing into the flowerbeds just a few yards away

Gasps erupted all around. Onlookers scattered like frightened birds

Not meant for her

Isla frowned. For a moment, she had thought someone was already trying to kill her

It was just like the suspicious accident three years ago

Recovering quickly, she peered inside the wrecked car. Through the shattered rear window, she could make out a man slumped inside, unconscious, his life or death uncertain

Smoke billowed from the hood, gasoline spilling across the pavement. The car could explode at

any moment

She started to turn awaythen her mentor’s warning echoed in her mind. Isla cursed under her breath, then pivoted and sprinted toward the wreckage

Isla-Logan shrieked from the ground, terrified

With one swift kick, she shattered the cracked window and reached in to wrench the door open. The bloodied man inside collapsed heavily against her

He was tall, broad, his weight nearly crushing the breath from her lungs

But he was still alive. She heard his ragged breathing and looked uphis eyes, clouded with pain, were still faintly conscious

Bloodied hands clawed at her shirt, gripping it desperately. The chain around his neck snapped, tugged into her grasp like a lifeline. His voice rasped through broken lips. Save me and I’ll give you anything you want.”

Then his strength gave out. He slumped against her, unconscious

Isla frowned, dismissing his words as delirium, and dragged him out with all her strength

She had barely taken a few steps whenBOOM. The car exploded behind them, the blast throwing both her and the man hard onto the pavement

She hadn’t been able to save the driver

For a moment, silence weighed on her. Then she lowered the man carefully to the ground

He was drenched in blood, his features barely recognizable

But his frame was powerful, his suit expensiveclearly no ordinary man

While Isla stood in thought, sirens wailed faintly in the distance, growing closer

Isla, are you alright?Logan hurried over, giving her a quick onceover

I’m fine.Isla’s brows furrowed slightly. She glanced at the blood soaking her hands, her face turning a shade paler. I’m going to the restroom.”

Without another word, she strode off

Logan scrambled to follow

His mentor had warned him. Isla was strong, but she suffered from hemophobia

Strange, reallywhy would someone afraid of blood choose to be a medical professor? But he worried nonetheless

If anything happened to her on his watch, he’d be in serious trouble

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the airport, a teenager’s irritated voice cut through the crowd

What’s with Isla? We came all the way here to pick her up, and she doesn’t even show. Is she messing with us? If Mom and Dad hadn’t forced me, I never would’ve come. Why didn’t she just die back then?”

The boy in a baseball jacket tossed his water bottle into a nearby trash can, his handsome face twisted with impatience. His words were cruel, dripping with spite

Don’t be so harsh, Lucas. The young woman at his side spoke gently, her tone soothing. Isla finally recovered. It’s only right for us, as her siblings, to welcome her back. Besides, she misunderstood me back then. I was hoping to apologize properly today.”

She wore a simple white dress, her hair styled elegantly. Her beauty was striking, her clear, luminous eyes enough to draw anyone in at a glance

What’s it got to do with you, Aurora? It was all her fault anyway. She made a scene at Dad’s birthday partywhat kind of lady behaves like that? She embarrassed the whole family. Honestly, I don’t even know why our parents bothered calling her back.”

The young man was handsome, about twenty, with a rebellious edge etched into his features

He was Lucas Beaumont, the Beaumont family’s youngest son, doted on by all

And the woman beside him was none other than Aurora Beaumontthe longlost eldest daughter the family had recovered five years ago

As the two spoke, a thunderous crash echoed from outside. Both of them flinched

What was that?”

Let’s check it out.”

They rushed out, only to find a crowd gathered in alarm

Aurora caught sight of someone sprawled on the ground and quickly called out, Please, make way. Let me through.”

By then, Isla and Logan had come out as well, just in time to see paramedics loading the injured man into an ambulance

Should we go see?Logan asked

Isla’s gaze lingered briefly, then she turned away, sliding into the car. No. Let’s head to the university.”

The ambulance was here. There was no need for her to get involved further

Fair enough. Anyway, our mentor already spoke to the school. You can start teaching tomorrow, said Isla

Alright,Logan said

When Aurora returned home, her delicate, innocent face glowed with excitement

Noticing Isla wasn’t back yet, she asked curiously, Mom, Isla isn’t here yet?”

Cora frowned. Didn’t you and Lucas go pick her up?”

Aurora lowered her gaze, her voice laced with grievance. We waited at the airport for ages, but never saw her. Maybe she’s still upset with me. Could she have lied about when she’d be arriving?”

Cora’s face darkened instantly. She wouldn’t dare.”

Aurora hurried forward to calm her. Mom, please don’t be angry. You know Isla doesn’t like me. I don’t blame her. But, Mom, I really don’t want to marry that man. And today—”

Her cheeks flushed pink, her words trailing off

Aurora hadn’t expected that the man she’d helped earlier would be so devastatingly handsome, so striking that her heart still pounded just remembering him

It felt as though he’d been tailormade for her

Cora’s brows shot up in surprise. Then she smirked knowingly, So, someone finally caught your eye? What about his background, Aurora? If he’s not from a good family, I won’t allow it.”

Mom,Aurora murmured shyly, her face blooming with bashful delight. He’s from the Ellsworth family. Their heir, Ronan Ellsworth.”
