Chapter 23 The Guilt
The rain fell hard, and the street below was empty.
There was no way to hail a cab here; one had to walk out of the neighborhood first.
So, Isla had walked in the heavy rain?
Where could she be–back at the school?
Ronan frowned in frustration.
“Who are you guys?” Isla snapped.
Inside Cloudie University, Isla faced a group of boys blocking her way.

She frowned. Truly, it was raining cats and dogs–her luck couldn’t be worse. They clearly meant trouble.
Isla was soaked, drenched to the skin.
Now, a few boys were blocking her path, their lecherous stares making her extremely uncomfortable.
“Hey, pretty girl, add us on WhatsApp. Look at you, all wet without an umbrella. No boyfriend to pick you up? Want us to take you home?” The leader’s eyes roamed lecherously across her chest.
Isla hugged the eggs tightly, trying to shield her chest, but her wet skirt clung heavily and couldn’t fully block their gaze.
“No, I have business to attend to,” she said coldly, frowning as she tried to walk past them.
“Hey, show us some respect–we’re still looking, you know,” the boy said, smiling, standing in her way.
Isla was truly exquisite. Her waist looked so sexy, her chest high and full, and her delicate skin made it impossible to look away.
He had hit the jackpot.
Isla’s voice grew even colder. “I already said no. Don’t understand my speech? This is still a school. What exactly are you trying to do?”
One of the boys reached out, intending to rest a hand on her shoulder, lowering his voice. “Just trying to chat, that’s all. Don’t be so rude, or don’t blame me for being impolite.”

But before his hand could touch her, it was grabbed from behind and yanked back.
Caught off guard, the boy stumbled several steps backward, almost falling to the ground.
His face flushed red with anger. “Who the hell-”
Ronan’s cold gaze fixed on him. “Back off.”
Isla looked at him in surprise. How was he here?

Seeing the older man, the boys froze, exchanged nervous glances, and then, in unspoken agreement, turned and ran.
Clearly, they dared not make a bigger scene.
Not far away, Lily, who had been sending photos to Aurora, was caught off guard. Someone actually helped Isla―her face darkened instantly.
“Her loser husband showed up. Those guys got scared off,” she messaged Aurora.
The rain was too heavy to make out the man’s facial features, but his clothing matched what she had seen that morning.
From a distance, he looked quite handsome, though unfortunately, he worked at a construction site.
Earlier, Lily had gone out to eat with some friends and happened to see Isla running through the rain to school.
So Lily asked a few younger students she was close to to go bother her.
Aurora, seeing the photos, felt vaguely familiar with the man, but the rain had blurred the camera’s image, so she didn’t think much of it.
Still, she was annoyed that Lily’s plan to cause trouble had failed.
That damn Isla had made Aurora make a fool of herself today, and Aurora wasn’t going to let her off easily.
With the troublemakers gone, Ronan turned to the bewildered girl. “Why are you still standing
there?”
Ronan looked at her, soaked and messy, the smooth skin revealed by her wet clothing, the seductive curves outlined by her skirt–it was almost enchanting, no wonder a few students had tried to harass her.
Isla still held the carton of eggs, a little shaken. Three quiet years abroad had almost made her

forget how dark the corners of this school could be.
No wonder something like this had happened.

Now, Isla obediently followed Ronan out of the school. Perhaps from being drenched, her voice had a muffled tone. “What are you doing here?”
Ronan hadn’t expected such a coincidence. He had merely hoped to glance at her, and now he had actually seen her surrounded by those boys.
Ronan glanced toward where a girl had been holding a phone to take photos, but the spot was now empty.
“Went out to get some things,” Ronan said coldly. Though holding an umbrella, his pant legs were soaked by the heavy rain.
Every step through the puddles felt like walking on needles.
His face pale, he asked, displeased, “Why did you go back to school?”
“My phone died. I came back to get a charger,” Isla replied.
She cast a glance at his legs, and somehow, the resentment that had been building in her chest eased a bit. “Thanks for earlier.”
Even if he hadn’t acted, Isla had her ways to teach these boys a lesson, but her medicine wouldn’t act instantly. Until then, she would still have to endure their harassment.
Ronan snorted coldly through his nostrils. “Don’t overthink it. I just can’t stand seeing a few guys picking on a girl.”
