Chapter 8
The ambulance arrived with sirens blaring, and the paramedics lifted Ryan onto a stretcher.
Anna was also severely injured, with blood splattered across the driver’s seat. The ambulance took her away as well.
While waiting outside the operating room, I called Thomas, who arrived quickly.
“Don’t worry too much. We’ll know what’s going on once the doctor comes out,” Thomas comforted me.
“Anna must face the consequences she deserves!” I gripped Thomas’s clothes tightly, my eyes red with tears.
“The law will punish the bad guys, it definitely will,” Thomas said, supporting me.
Half an hour later, the doctor emerged.
“Mr. Edwards is out of danger now. We need a family member to sign some papers.”
Ryan’s parents, Andrew Edwards and Sofia Edwards, had arrived just ten minutes earlier. Hearing that Ryan was okay, they both breathed a sigh of relief.

Sofia walked over and took my hand.

“You must be Eleanor, right? Ryan has always been stubborn since he was little. I often hear him mention you. When he likes someone, he’ll do everything to protect them.”
Sofia spoke while tears streamed down her face.
She continued, “Whether it’s friendship or love, please don’t let him down.”
I gently patted the back of her hand, feeling conflicted.
Then the doctor said, “Would anyone like to visit? You can go in now, but don’t stay too long.”
Andrew and Sofia went in for a while, then said they needed to go home to make soup and asked me to help watch over Ryan.
Ryan lay in the hospital bed with tubes all over his body, his face pale.
I gently held his hand as tears kept flowing.
“Ryan, why were you so foolish? Was it worth it?” I said.
“It was worth it, as long as you’re okay,” Ryan replied weakly.
I held him close, crying so hard I could barely breathe.

“The trial starts tomorrow. I’ll make sure we get justice,” I said coldly.
On the day of the trial, Anthony’s defense attorney tried
desperately to portray him as an innocent victim caught up by a crazed admirer.
The lawyer also claimed that the crucial video was something Anna had coaxed Anthony into saying.
That was until the prosecutor played the decisive evidence— surveillance footage from the parking garage.
In the footage, Anthony handed Anna a packet of white powder, clearly saying, “Double the dose this time. I want to make sure she doesn’t live past Christmas.”
Anthony’s lawyer was instantly speechless. From the beginning, Anthony appeared dejected and disheveled, a stark contrast to his usual polished appearance.
Throughout the judge’s questioning, he remained silent.
It wasn’t until Anna appeared in court that Anthony showed any
reaction.
He said in a low voice, “It’s all that woman’s fault.”

“What did you say?” The judge didn’t hear clearly.
Anthony suddenly shouted like a madman, “That woman seduced me! It was her idea!”
After being rushed to the hospital yesterday, Anna was diagnosed with a miscarriage and was already mentally unstable.

Before the trial, doctors had given her sedatives; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to sit quietly in the defendant’s chair.
Initially, she showed no expression and, like Anthony, remained silent to the judge’s questions.
But when she heard Anthony shifting all the blame onto her, she broke down in court and testified that everything had been Anthony’s plan.
To secure a reduced sentence, Anna revealed even more details.
Including how Anthony had used his position to embezzle company funds, and how he planned to marry me before my “accidental death” so he could inherit my shares after I died.
During recess, I cornered Anna in the hallway and asked, “Why? I don’t understand why you both treated me this way, planning it since high school.”
