Barbara silently curled her lips: “You haven’t changed. Since you’ve made up your mind, I’ll find a way to get you out. I’ll hire a fake death agency and sign a fake death agreement in your name. The timing will be…”
“Mid next month,”
Rita calmly took over: “On Alexander’s wedding day.”
“Alright,” Barbara’s voice carried a hint of mischief, “then this time we’ll go big.”
Rita didn’t know how she’d pull it off, but achieving the goal was all that mattered.
From now on, she just wanted to vanish completely from their world.
Rita calmly said thanks, returned the phone, and walked out of the convenience store.
“So, come to your senses?”
She followed the voice and looked at Sean leaning by the entrance, silent.
“Rita,”
Sean bent down, wiping the moisture off her face, “I can forgive you for having another man. Come back to me?”
The familiar scent of icy pine filled her nostrils, instantly dragging Rita’s memories far back.
She’d been with Sean for ten years.
At first, she was just a poor student he casually sponsored.
Later, after he lured her into tasting forbidden fruit, everything changed between them.
Starting when he brought her to that villa at eighteen.
All those years, he poured money and resources into her, molding her into a socialite.

288 Vouchers
Until she accidentally heard about his engagement plans, and some meddlesome friends asked how he’d handle her.
The man lazily swirled his wine glass, chuckling with downcast eyes: “Why release a stray pet just because you’re marrying?”
“Aren’t you afraid your little bird might fly off?”
Sean smiled, enunciating clearly: “Just some creature begging for scraps. Used to luxury–why would it run?”
He’d spelled out their relationship long ago.
She was merely a pet he could keep or discard anytime.
That lavish life? Just to clip her wings and trap her in the abyss.
But he never knew: those raised in darkness don’t fear the night.
So with Barbara’s help, she’d vanished without a word–no matter how frantically he searched.
Yet never imagined after all that circling, she’d end up right back where she started.
“I’ve never had a taste for being any man’s mistress–not before, not ever.
Sean, I’ll repeat: I’m married.”
Rita took a sharp breath: “Whatever happens between him and me is our business. Not your concern.
Even if we split, I won’t return to you. I stopped loving you ages ago.”
Sean let out cold, successive laughs: “Perfect.”
She’d rather be the other woman for some lying cheat than lower her head for him.
Rita took a step back at his icy stare, only to be yanked forward abruptly as he sealed her lips with practiced force.
The metallic tang of blood mingled with rain on their tongues.
Her clenched fists pounded uselessly against his chest like hammering steel.
When Sean’s fingers brushed the erogenous zone behind her ear, her whole body shuddered. She drove her knee into his abdomen, breaking his grip long enough to slap him with every ounce of strength.
Her trembling hand hovered mid–air as realization dawned.
Sean stared darkly at her, a twisted smile curling his lips. “Feel better now?”
“Come home if you’re done. I’ve been fucking losing my mind searching for you.”
The words barely faded when blinding headlights tore through the darkness, pinning them in its harsh glare.
