After a pause,
she looked at Chloe and said word by word, “But I swear I’m gonna find out what hap- pened to my baby. Whoever did this will pay the price.”
Her gaze was so icy and ruthless that a chill ran down Chloe’s spine.
That was the Roxanne she knew-unlike her appearance, Roxanne was tougher than anyone.
She put down the phone and grasped Roxanne’s cold hands.
“Roxy, I’ll help. Whoever did this will pay dearly for this. I swear!”

In the middle of the night, Roxanne was jolted awake by thunder. Tossing and turning, she found it hard to sleep again.

As she stared blankly at the dim night light, her thoughts drifted far away.
What had happened when she was ten came flooding back to her mind.
After going through everything, she finally came to Seaville at the age of twelve. From then on, she re- mained by Johnny’s side for twelve entire years.
She really didn’t know she was pregnant. It was just an accident.
Tears streamed down her face before she even realized it.
The cruel reality was the final blow, crushing her. All the toughness she had maintained throughout the day shattered to pieces.
The baby was the only good thing to come out of their marriage,
But it was gone.
Gone … for good.
She buried her face in her hands and burst into tears…
The night was deep and dark.

The storm raged. Raindrops pounded against the window, creating a frantic, nearly deafening rhythm.
Johnny shot upright in bed, panting, his forehead drenched in sweat.
He had the same nightmare.
Once again, he was submerged in bone-chilling water. No matter how he struggled, he couldn’t draw breath and could only watch in utter helplessness as he sank into an endless darkness. The suffocation felt so real that the fear still lingered.
Feeling irked, he ran his hands through his hair and walked up to the big floor-to-ceiling window, gaz- ing at the city in the rain.
The downpour didn’t help with the gloominess gripping his heart. If anything, it made it worse.
He walked toward the wine cabinet, poured himself a full glass of whiskey, and gulped it down.
The burning liquor scorched his throat while the inexplicable panic and uneasy still haunted him.
It felt like something bad had happened.
His heart ached faintly, and for the first time, he found himself … at a loss.
Early the next morning, a nurse wheeled Roxanne into the OR.
She was surrounded by cold metal instruments, glaring lights, and the lingering smell of disinfectant.
The doctor frowned at her report.
“There’s still remaining tissue in your uterus, so a dilation and curettage is a must. I presume you know about your genetic defect and your allergies to all anesthetics, right? I’m afraid we can’t use any anes- thesia for this procedure.”
In other words, she had to endure the excruciating procedure fully awake and aware.
She nodded, trembling slightly out of fear and coldness.
As she gritted her teeth, her nails dug into her palms.
The moment the cold steel was inside her, the sharp, tearing pain instantly tore through her.
She couldn’t help but let out a muffled groan as her forehead was instantly drenched in cold sweat.
It hurt.
It hurt so much.

Tears welled up in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks uncontrollably, blurring her vision together
with the sweat.
She bit her lip so hard that blood oozed out, the metallic taste spreading in her mouth.
She must remember the pain.
Nothing hurt more than losing her baby. Who exactly did this to her, putting her through all this?
She swore she’d find out the culprit and make them pay!
Waves of agony swamped her. She felt like a fragile boat adrift in a storm, on the brink of being torn
apart.
