Gritting her teeth, she dialed Alexander.
The call connected, and her fury erupted:
“Alexander!
Where are you hiding Lisa?!”
A cold scoff came through the receiver.
“She’s your best friend, and you’re asking me?
Matthew, how pathetic is that?”
Matthew spat back, words tumbling out:
“Pathetic? You’re the joke here!
What a ‘dutiful‘ husband you are!
Beyond that crap in bed, what kind of man are you? Huh?
Do you even know what she’s going through?
Do you care if she’s safe?!”
Beep-
The line went dead.

Alexander gripped his phone, knuckles white.
The air around him turned glacial, his face darkening like storm
clouds.
At seven in the evening, Lisa stepped out of the Corporate Tower, breathing in the fresh air–even the air tasted sweet.
Because she’d done it–created the most crucial vial of reagent.
This vial would save countless lives.
At eight, Alexander arrived at Lisa’s apartment door.
He’d had Andrew book a restaurant, but Lisa had outright refused to
meet him.
She’d simply left a message: if he had business, he should come to her!
Fine then–so he stormed over!
Lisa opened the door, frowning tightly at the figure outside.
Alexander?
Impeccably suited, every detail precise, utterly out of place in this modest apartment.
“Mr. Ford, what brings you here?”
Her tone gave nothing away.
Alexander didn’t answer, his gaze sliding past her into the room.

“Lisa, I need to ask you something.”
As he spoke, he pushed the door open and walked in, fluid and natural, as if he owned the place.
His steps halted beside the small dining table.
Two dishes and a bowl of rice sat waiting.
The Spicy Herb Omelet glistened brightly; steam still rose from the Beef Mushroom Stir–fry.
Eating utensils rested beside the bowl–clearly untouched.
“You haven’t eaten?”
He asked.
“Obviously not.”
Lisa shut the door, her voice laced with faint sarcasm.
Alexander shamelessly pulled out the chair opposite hers and sat.
“I haven’t eaten either.”
He paused briefly before adding, “Wanted to take you out, but you refused. So here I am.”
The implication was crystal clear: he intended to share her meal.
Lisa approached the table without looking at him.
“Say what you need to say. My food’s getting cold.”

She just wanted him gone.
But Alexander made himself right at home.
He picked up the utensils, helping himself to a bite of the omelet.
Chewed thoughtfully.
“Not bad.”
He commented, then scooped up some beef.
Too fast for Lisa to stop him.
Swallowing, he looked up. “Why not get another bowl? We can talk over dinner.”
Lisa nearly laughed in disbelief.
Since when had this man become so brazen?
There wasn’t enough food for him.
She drew a deep breath, quelling her anger, and sat across from him.
“Whatever it is, make it quick.”
Her voice turned icy.
Alexander set down his utensils, wiping his mouth with a napkin, deliberately slow.
His probing stare made her skin crawl.

“I heard you’re an orphan.”
His tone was casual, but the words cut deep. “Came to Seattle in your
teens.”
It sounded like small talk, yet felt like a test.
Lisa’s expression remained unchanged.
She simply watched him.
Had he lost his mind?
Her ex–husband barging into her home, eating her dinner, making idle chatter?
What kind of game was this?
“If you’re here for chitchat, Mr. Ford, please leave.”
Her voice dropped colder. “I have work later.”
Alexander pretended not to hear the dismissal.
He leaned forward slightly, eyes locking onto hers.
Lisa, why did you marry into the Ford Family back then?”
She paused, momentarily speechless before answering matter–of–factly, “Obviously for your family’s money. What else?”
The sarcasm in her retort visibly irritated Alexander. He snapped, “Not
for me?”

Lisa: “…”
“Lisa… did we know each other as children?”
He finally voiced the question.
“No!”
Her single–syllable reply trembled slightly yet rang with finality.
That chapter was closed.
The thorny path of blood and tears–she refused to revisit it.
Three years they’d shared a roof, yet he’d never cared to know her.
Had he asked earlier, she might have told their story.
Now? Pointless.
“Ring–ring–ring.”
The phone shattered the silence.
Lisa answered Matthew’s call. As she listened, color drained from her face. Hanging up, she stood frozen, clutching the phone like she might crush it.
Alexander immediately noticed her shift. “What happened?”
Smack!
Her palm struck his cheek with stinging clarity.

Lisa’s hand remained suspended mid–air, fingertips tingling.
Alexander’s face snapped sideways from the blow. Seconds later, he slowly turned back, a crimson mark blooming on his cheek.
He stared at her like she was a stranger.
“Lisa, what’s gotten into you?”
Her chest heaved violently, eyes bloodshot with rage.
“Did you send Ford Family’s legal team to bail out that Patricia?”
Her voice quivered with fury.
