Teresa fell silent. After a long pause, she shot back, “So what did I even say? Haven’t I already broken- things off with him? We talked everything through today, and from now on, we’re going our separate
ways.”
“Yeah, isn’t that a good thing? So why are you still feeling down?” Evelyn asked.
Teresa snapped, “Do you really have to butt into how I feel? Lucas, just take Mom out, will you?” She just didn’t want to listen to Evelyn anymore.
Lucas pulled Evelyn out.
Evelyn grumbled, “That little brat. Why is she snapping at me? She’s going to be the death of me, I swear. She has always been so stubborn and difficult ever since she was a kid. Wonder who she takes
after.
“With a temper like hers, she never talks nicely to anyone.”
Lucas said, “Mom, don’t say that about Teresa. She’s still so young, and she’s already had two kids.
She’s exhausted–we should cut her some slack.
“I think she’s been really strong. Isn’t she feeling down now because she still cares about Jonathan? If
she still has feelings for him, why can’t they get back together?”
Lucas felt sorry for both Teresa and Jonathan. He wanted them to get back together.
Evelyn said, “Lucas, you’ve never even been in a relationship, have you? Feelings–look where that’s gotten us. Everything’s a mess now. Maybe Jonathan wants the same thing–just break it off and start
over.”
Lucas sighed.
Suddenly, his phone rang.
Lucas picked it up. After listening to the person on the other end, his expression shifted. He exclaimed, “Really? Got it. I’ll go pick him up.”
After hanging up, he explained to Evelyn that one of his friends had gotten drunk, and he was heading out to pick the friend up.
“Make sure you come back early. You can take my car, or Teresa’s,” Evelyn said.
“Okay, Mom. Just look after Teresa for me,” Lucas replied.

Evelyn sighed, thought for a moment, and then went back to Teresa’s room. Seeing the floor littered with tissues soaked in Teresa’s tears, she could only sigh helplessly.
She said, “You’re sitting here feeling sorry for yourself, but for all you know, Jonathan’s out there living it up, not feeling half as miserable as you are.”
“He’s leaving the day after tomorrow,” Teresa said.
Evelyn nodded and said, “Well, isn’t that great? Where he goes doesn’t matter to you anymore. You should just take Mike and Felix and move into Forlisle Rose Estates.”
“I’m not going,” Teresa replied without hesitation.
Evelyn said, “Why not? He’s already transferred the house to you. He just wants the kids to have a good place to live. Do you really think he’s doing this just for you?
“Even if you’re just benefiting because of the kids, you should still enjoy it while you can. There’s even a nanny there to take care of you. It’s perfect.
“Lucas, Isabel, and I will stay here. I’ll find another job as soon as I can and move out. Lucas will look for a job too.”
Teresa frowned and said, “Just stay here. I’m not going to kick you out.”
Evelyn said helplessly, “Look, how are we supposed to fit everyone in here? There are so many people now–Lucas is even sleeping on the couch. You should just take the kids and move to Forlisle Rose
Estates.
“Jonathan’s leaving the country soon anyway. Who knows, maybe he’ll find some rich girl overseas, get married, and start a new family. While he still cares about the kids, you should take what’s rightfully yours and accept it with a clear conscience.”
The thought of Jonathan actually finding some beautiful woman in a foreign country made Teresa’s heart clench. She asked, “Do you have to put it that way about him?”
Evelyn retorted, “What did I even say about him? Men are just like that. Jonathan’s a decent guy, but as long as Irene’s in the picture, there’s no way we’ll ever get along. I’m not letting you walk back into that mess again.
