“Besides, you know our remarriage was just for show. It’s honestly not that surprising that things turned out this way. From now on, I just want to make some money and take good care of my kids.”
“Are you
still running the company?” Jennifer asked.
“What else can I do? Gotta make a good life for myself,” Teresa replied.
“Doesn’t he give you 6 million dollars a year? And when the kids go to school, it’ll be 60 million a year?” Jennifer asked.
Evelyn had told Jennifer everything. She even complained to Jennifer that Teresa didn’t know how to enjoy life, refusing to move into the big villa.
Teresa sneered inwardly, ‘Evelyn really does spill everything to Jennifer. She must be super fond of her!
She replied, “What he gives me is his business. I want to make it on my own. I don’t want anyone looking down on me anymore.”
Jennifer’s heart ached for her. She said, “Oh, Teresa, it’s still my fault. Honestly, I’ve held you back from so much.”
Teresa said, “Forget it, it’s all in the past now.” Then she glanced at the time and said, “I’ll come visit you again next time. And I’ll save an executive spot for you.”
“Alright, I hope you become a real boss lady in Nareigh,” Jennifer said.
“I’ll work hard,” Teresa replied.
“Just don’t push yourself too hard,” Jennifer said, watching Teresa closely.
Just as Teresa was about to leave, Jennifer suddenly called after her, “Wait a second.” Then she took out a lucky charm pouch and handed it to Teresa.
She said, “I made this for Felix here in prison. It’s not very well done, so if you don’t like it, just put it aside.”
Teresa took the pouch.
The pouch was done by hand. In the center was the character “Happy,” and in the bottom right corner, the name “Felix” was stitched.
At that moment, Teresa couldn’t hold back her tears anymore. She said, “Thank you, Jennifer. I’m thanking you on your nephew’s behalf.”
Jennifer froze, momentarily at a loss for words. She thought, ‘Nephew? Does she still treat me as her family?‘ Suddenly, tears streamed down her face. She said, “I’m sorry, Teresa. I’m really sorry.”
Teresa gently interrupted her, “Enough, you don’t have to say it anymore. What’s done is done. Let’s just
move on.”

Jennifer wiped her tears and managed a smile. She said, “Next time, I’ll make one for Mike too. Come get it when it’s ready, okay?”
Teresa agreed, then left prison. Her eyes were red from crying. The gentle winter sunlight streamed through her car window, and for a brief moment, she felt a little warmth and comfort.
When Teresa arrived at the office, the receptionist stood up in surprise. She hadn’t expected Teresa to show up. She asked, “Ms. Johnston, did you already have your baby?”
“Yeah,” Teresa said softly.
“That was so fast,” the receptionist said in amazement.
Teresa didn’t bother explaining. She just headed straight for the elevator.
The receptionist couldn’t take her eyes off Teresa as she walked away. She muttered, “Ms. Johnston is gorgeous. She looks even classier after having a baby.”
“Seriously, with Horizonlead Group backing her, does she even need to work? Why is she working so hard?” another employee whispered.
“No clue,” the receptionist replied.
Teresa was back in her familiar office. She drew back the curtains, letting the sunlight spill in, then made herself a cup of coffee. Only when she stood here did everything feel real again.
She thought, ‘This is fine. Everything’s finally getting back on track. This is the best it could be.‘
If Yalena hadn’t provoked her and Jennifer hadn’t been sent to prison, Teresa wouldn’t be delivering until next month. Still, she figured it was just as well things had turned out this way.
She had come to understand a lot and gained clarity about so many things. She was determined to put all her energy into making money.
Just then, her phone buzzed.
Teresa picked it up and saw Jonathan’s name on the screen. She froze for a second. She thought, ‘I was just about to put him out of my mind, and now he calls? Seriously, what does he want now?‘
