Teresa was in so much pain that cold sweat broke out on her forehead. After a while, she managed to choke out, “My milk’s coming in. I’m too exhausted to explain.”
Jonathan raised an eyebrow. “What?”
“Even if I told you, you wouldn’t get it. Go look it up yourself.” Teresa was in too much pain. She hung up the phone.
Jonathan called the maternity center, and the postpartum nanny explained that it was normal for new moms to have engorgement after giving birth. But Teresa was in a lot of pain, especially since the little one was still in the incubator.
“So what should we do now?” Jonathan asked.
“Mrs. Lynn is still really uncomfortable,” the nanny replied. “I’m putting cold compresses on her for now, and I’ll bring her a breast pump soon. Once the milk gets flowing, the pain should ease up.”
Jonathan hung up the phone as he arrived at the office. Once he finished his work, he could go back to check on Teresa.
During the meeting, Jonathan focused on summarizing the past few days‘ work, but part of his mind was still on Teresa, wondering how she was doing.
While his employees were giving their reports, Jonathan sent Teresa a message, asking if she was feeling any better.
But Teresa still hadn’t replied. He was distracted, glancing at his watch from time to time and tapping his fingers on the table. She never mentioned being in pain when he was there.
He’d looked it up. Moms usually started getting engorged about three days after giving birth. The real issue was that the baby was still in the incubator; otherwise, Teresa wouldn’t be in so much pain.
“Mr. Lynn?” One of the senior executives sitting next to Jonathan quietly reminded him, a bit worried if he was feeling okay.
Jonathan said he was fine, and the meeting continued.
Finally, Teresa replied, [Just leave me alone.]
Teresa hadn’t had this much trouble with engorgement when she gave birth to Michael. But now, with the new baby still stuck in the incubator and no little one to help clear the milk, Teresa had no choice but to handle it herself.
Two postpartum nannies stayed by Teresa’s side, one applying a cold compress, the other wrapping a warm towel for a hot compress.
Teresa said she’d take care of it herself.
“Ms. Johnston, you really need to stick to lighter foods for now,” one of the nannies advised. “If you keep eating all those rich, heavy dishes, the blockage will just get worse.”
“Yeah, I get it. You can go tell Mr. Lynn yourselves,” Teresa replied.
It wasn’t like Teresa actually wanted to eat all that stuff. Jonathan thought she was anemic, so he’d had the nutritionist bring in all these nourishing foods for her. He wanted her to have them three times a day, every day.
Teresa was in so much pain that she almost wanted to tear herself apart. Giving birth was pure hell, before, during, and even after it was all over.
By the time it was almost dawn, the pain still kept her wide awake. She had no clue when this nightmare would end. Outside, she heard a noise, Jonathan was back.
Teresa stared at Jonathan’s tall frame, looking worn out from the road, feeling a bit at a loss. “Why are you back?”
“Are you okay? Does it still hurt?” Jonathan asked.

Meeting his intense gaze, Teresa quickly tugged her shirt up, a little embarrassed. “Even if you’re back, you can’t really help. The postpartum nanny got me a breast pump. I’ll just use that.”
Without another word, Jonathan sat down beside her. “I’m here now, aren’t 17 Why mess with that machine when you’ve got me right here, ready to help?”
“You don’t have the strength for this,” Teresa teased.
“I don’t have the strength?” Jonathan shot back, sounding genuinely offended.
Teresa hurried to explain, “That’s not what I meant. It’s just that this kind of thing needs-” Before she could finish, Jonathan had already reached out and gently pulled up her shirt.
Teresa barely slept all night, but by the next morning, the pain was finally gone.
