Chapter 3

I didn’t remember when I had fallen asleep. I just knew I had cried until I couldn’t breathe.

When I woke up the next morning, my eyes were so puffy I could barely open them.

I just threw on a pair of sunglasses and headed downstairs, only to find someone already busy moving around down

there.

Theodore came out holding some soup. He paused for a second when he saw me, but then quickly smiled like every- thing was fine.

“Hey, you’re up? I made you breakfast. Try some.

“I know you must’ve been upset about yesterday. I didn’t even rest and flew back as soon as possible.”

I was about to tell him I didn’t want it when I saw a familiar figure in pajamas come rushing out of the bathroom.

She ran straight into Theodore’s arms and said sweetly, “Dr. Gibson really has that whole husband vibe going on. I’m such a sucker for men like you.”

Theodore quickly pulled her away, sounding clearly flustered.

“You’re a grown-up, but you still act like a little kid sometimes.”

He turned to me and tried to explain.

“It was pouring when we landed, and we were both soaked. I told Mandy to go home and change first, but she insisted on coming with me to apologize to you. That’s why I grabbed some of your clothes for her to change into.”

Mandy stuck her tongue out and said to me, “Mrs. Gibson, I’m really here to say sorry. I was really joking yesterday. If you’re still worried, I’ll go find someone to date this weekend and get married quickly. I definitely won’t mess with your relationship.”

“Mandy! Don’t be silly.” Theodore cut in.

Then, noticing my sarcastic smile, he quickly added, “What I mean is, Luna has always been so kind and gentle. I’m sure she’s already forgiven you. There’s no need for you to go around dating anyone.

“Right, Luna? Let’s just forget what happened yesterday, okay?”

My children were barely cold in their graves, and yet he had been lingering affectionately with his new love under the fireworks.

And now he expected me to drop it? Of course I could.

I curled my lips into a sarcastic smile. “It’s fine, I don’t mind.”

After all, they would be heading to Africa soon enough.

What kind of relationship the two of them had, where they had gone last night, what they had done-I didn’t care in the slightest.

Hearing me say that, Theodore seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, pushing up his gold-rimmed glasses.

“It’s good that you’re being sensible. I’ve rescheduled all my upcoming surgeries. I’ll stay with you during this time. I’ll go back to work once you’re in a better mood and after the children’s memorial service.”

I calmly replied, “Okay.”

He was the children’s father. He should have stayed by their urn, accompanying them through their memorial service.

Mandy’s eyes flickered with displeasure. She rolled them slightly, then suddenly took the soup from Theodore’s hands and walked over to me.

“Mrs. Gibson, come try the seafood soup Dr. Gibson made. Last time I went to the beach with him, we had some, and I told him how good it was. He said he’d learn to make it. I just tasted it, and it tastes exactly like the one from back then.”

Theodore shot me a panicked glance.

He’d always said his hands were for saving lives. He would never took or do housework.

But last month, he started going into the kitchen after work and made a total mess every time.

Back then, the kids were really sick, and I was completely drained.

I thought maybe he felt bad for me and wanted to help lighten my load.

While I was cleaning up after him, I actually felt this bittersweet kind of hope that he’d cook for me and the kids again.

It turned out he was just trying to replicate Mandy’s seafood soup.

As soon as I caught a whiff of that fishy smell I hate so much, red rashes instantly popped up on my skin.

Taking a few steps back, I covered my mouth and said coldly, “I’m allergic to seafood. Please take it away.”

But suddenly, Mandy’s hand trembled, and the hot soup spilled all over her chest. She let out a scream and tumbled down the stairs.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Gibson! I didn’t know. Dr. Gibson, it hurts so bad.”

“Luna! Are you out of your mind?” Theodore shouted. “Mandy didn’t know about your allergy. Did you really have to push her like that?”

“I didn’t!” I shot back, trying hard not to throw up.

“You still won’t admit it? Do you really think Mandy would’ve spilled the soup on herself?”

He looked at me with pure disgust. “You seriously look like a crazy woman right now.”

Then he scooped Mandy into his arms and stormed outside.

“I’m warning you, take both our names off that list right now or I’m not letting this go!”
