Chapter 5
He started showing up with Mandy at all kinds of academic conferences and dinners.
They dressed like a couple, even holding hands during interviews.
Even at the press conference for the project I had funded, he said loudly, “Mandy played a huge role in this project. Without her, it wouldn’t have succeeded.”
They shared a smile, and the media captured the scene.
When the photo came out, the headline went like this.
“Cardiothoracic Surgeon Theodore Gibson and His Wife Attend Research Launch.”
“A Love Story for the Ages.”
He even shared the article himself, stating. “Happy about the new drug launch.”
But he didn’t say a word to clear up the misunderstanding about Mandy being his wife.
The comments were mostly saying how cute they looked together or sending congratulations.
Some people even asked, “Dr. Gibson, isn’t this a bit inappropriate?”
But the next second, the comment was gone.
I read through everything quietly, took screenshots, and sent them to my lawyer.
Maybe because I didn’t react at all, they just lost interest.
Then someone sent me a secretly recorded video.
In the med room, Mandy’s chest burn was visible, and Theodore was gently applying ointment with a cotton swab.
She whispered, “Dr. Gibson, it still hurts. Why don’t you just use your fingers instead?”
Theodore swallowed hard, dropped the cotton swab, and that’s where the video ended.
The person who sent it added a giggling emoji.
“Ms. Hackett, don’t misunderstand this. It’s just applying some medicine.”
I replied calmly, “I won’t.”
Honestly, they were going to Africa together anyway. I didn’t care what they did anymore.
On the day of the kids’ memorial service, I decorated the house with a Batman theme.

That had always been their biggest wish-to have a Batman-themed birthday party.
They’d waited so long, but every year Theodore would say no. “Why bother with all the decorations? It’s just going to make a mess. Why not just eat a cake?”
And even for the birthday cake, he hardly ever stayed around to eat with them.
He always mentioned that he was busy and he had no time for the kids.
But somehow, he had plenty of time to spend a whole day at Disneyland with Mandy.
My children, who barely got to live in this world, deserved at least one birthday that they loved.
With tears in my eyes, I sang “Happy Birthday” over and over again in front of their urns.
The phone rang, and it was someone from the management company. They sounded really urgent.
“Something’s going down. You should check online right away. Dr. Gibson and the hospital doctors are about to launch a public strike against you.”
I unlocked my phone and saw a video Theodore had just posted on his account.
He was dressed in a suit, with Mandy beside him.
Looking serious, he said, “Even though Luna is my wife, I can’t just stand by and watch her keep acting this way.
“Ever since the kids’ surgery failed, she’s been blaming me for killing our children. She even dragged my student Mandy, who was the anesthesiologist during that surgery, into all of this, spreading nasty rumors about her. When other doctors tried to explain things, she turned on them, too, forcing them to be sent to Africa. And if they refused, she started demanding huge compensation.
“Because this affects all of our futures, I’m joining the doctors who’ve been hurt by this and announcing a strike. We’re halting all surgeries until Luna publicly apologizes, compensates everyone for the emotional damage. Most im- portantly, she needs to get down on her knees and personally apologize to my student Mandy!”
