In the research lab, Amy had woken up. She had just finished reading Keith’s research report and was deeply shaken.
When Keith walked in, the wind from the door gap swept over Amy’s body, making her shiver from the cold.
He immediately took off his coat and draped it over her. Just as she was about to refuse, he said, “As one of the first batch of test subjects, your health is crucial. There can’t be any slip–ups.”
Amy nodded and continued writing her letter.
This letter was addressed to her future self, after the experiment.
It recorded the pain and betrayal she had endured in the first half of her life. She wanted her future self to open this letter on the day she was about to repeat the same mistakes.
Keith waited quietly. When she finished writing, she handed him the letter.
“Keith, I’m counting on you.”
“I want Walter to disappear from all my memories. The Davis family, including Michelle, and my child Robert–ev- erything related to him, erase it all.”
Keith looked into Amy’s determined eyes, his gaze brushing over the purple bruises scattered across her fair skin.
When the appointed time came that day, he couldn’t reach Amy at all.
He knew she was the most punctual person. Unless it was a matter of life and death, she would never break an ap- pointment.
So he had the lab staff hack into Amy’s watch for its location.
When the group rushed to the bridge underpass, they saw her frail body surrounded by a group of homeless men. In that moment, he nearly lost control and killed someone.
He still remembered how, on the way back, Amy trembled and sobbed in his arms, her blood soaking through his
coat.
That cheerful little girl who used to follow him around doing experiments in college had been trampled to such a
state.
As he listened to Amy recount the incident in broken sentences, his fingernails dug into his palm.
He had originally had reservations about her being in the first batch of test subjects, but in that moment, he agreed.
With this kind of pain, if she didn’t erase the memories of that person, how could she live the rest of her life?

Keith put the letter away and said softly,
“He’s looking for you.”
“He thought you died in the river, so he had it drained.”
“He even offered a hundred million as a reward for finding you.”

Amy’s expression remained calm. She looked up and joked deliberately, “Then hand me over, Keith, and get that hun- dred million.”
Keith was amused by her.
“It’s just a hundred million. It’s not like I don’t have it.”
“Amy, for this experiment, you’re the only one in the first batch.
I have complete confidence in my research, but any experiment carries risks. I…”
Amy interrupted him. She pulled out the volunteer sign–up sheet from the research report and solemnly filled in her
name.
“I trust you, Keith. This experiment was originally my research.
If it weren’t for my child’s death four years ago, I would never have given it up.”
“And I want to thank you for persevering and completing this research for me.”
She stood up, high–fived Keith firmly, and walked into the lab without looking back.
Eight hours later, dozens of people from the research lab waited by the lab door, worry and anticipation on all their
faces.
Finally, the door opened, and Amy slowly walked out in a white surgical gown.
“Amy, do you remember me?”
Keith was the first to step forward, sweat beading on his forehead as he anxiously studied Amy Carter’s face.
Amy shook her head blankly.
Keith’s legs buckled. Every research note from this experiment flashed before his eyes.
Impossible!
This couldn’t have failed!
Just as he lunged toward the lab to test it himself, Amy grabbed his hand.
“Got you, Keith!” She stuck out her tongue, swaying triumphantly.
Keith froze, seeing the Amy from four years ago. That vibrant, quirky girl.

He approached her quietly. “Then… do you remember where you’ve been these four years? What happened?”
The room held its breath, waiting.
“Keith, are you losing it?
“Haven’t I been right here in the research lab?”
“But seriously, what was I supposed to forget? Why was I the test subject?”
“Whatever! Just check if it worked!”
“We need to publish this breakthrough worldwide!”
A smile spread across Keith’s lips.
She forgot!
Everything!
Dozens of researchers swarmed Amy.
The years–long project had finally succeeded.
They tossed her skyward, catching her in steady hands.
“Success!”
“Amy! We did it!”
