Walter flung Michelle aside.
He loomed over her, stomping his foot heavily on her shoulder.
“I wanted you buried with Rob when he died. If you hadn’t claimed pregnancy, I’d never have spared you.”
Michelle lay sprawled on the ground, laughter bubbling into hysterics as she pointed at Walter.
“How hypocritical! You preach love for Amy, yet every action destroys her.”
“The moment you let me strip and straddle you without pushing me away–you murdered the Amy nurtured by your ‘love‘.”
“Search your soul! Isn’t her suffering entirely your creation?”
Walter swayed dizzily.
He refused to accept it!
“Shut up!
This is all your fault!”
Blood seeped from Michelle’s crushed shoulder. She’d lost.
But even in defeat, she’d make Walter suffer.
“Amy forgot you because she hates you!”
“You killed her child! Nearly killed her!
You wanted an obedient housewife, yet forgot why she stayed?”
“She left when she saw your love die!”
“You deserve this, Walter!
A monster like you will die wretched! You’ll rot in agony–because no one you love could ever love you back!”
Walter clamped hands over his ears. Each word struck like a tightening curse, searing his mind with unbearable clari-
- ty.
“Take her away!
She’ll endure every torment Amy suffered!”

Chapter 20
Michelle’s screams turned frantic as she pictured those homeless men. But Walter offered no mercy.
Dragged into a van, she vanished toward the outskirts.
Days later, Amy sorted lab notes in the research garden when a figure emerged at the path’s end.
Walter.
He’d aged a decade overnight.

His once–proud frame hunched; expensive suits hung like sacks. Gaunt and bloodless, his chapped lips framed sunken eyes veined crimson.
Amy sensed that scorching, leaden gaze. Disgust twisted her features as she recoiled, icy revulsion flashing–as if viewing filth.
Her reaction doused Walter’s last feeble hope.
He stepped toward her, each footfall like walking on blades.
“Stay back!”
Amy’s command sliced the air, sharp and absolute.
Walter froze. His parched throat scraped out broken words:
“Amy… I’m sorry.”
“I failed you. Failed Rob…”
“Please listen? I never approved scattering his ashes–never knew they’d dump them… The bridge tunnel… I failed to
protect you-”
His voice shattered. Agony bent him double, face buried in trembling hands, shoulders heaving violently.
But Amy Carter faced his anguish with eerie calm.
“Mr. Davis, I don’t know who you are, nor do I care about the painful past you mentioned.”
She paused, her gaze turning icy.
“The Amy from before chose to forget. That was her answer, and it’s mine now.”
“Please leave. Never show yourself before me again.”
“Save your confessions for hell.”
Without another glance at Walter, she turned decisively and strode toward the bright research building.
His outstretched hand froze mid–air, grabbing at nothing but air.
Watching her retreating figure and hearing those merciless words, the last shred of strength drained from him.
