Blinding white light made her squint when she woke.
Beside her, Walter’s ragged breaths filled the air as he clutched her hand, his dark eyes bloodshot.
“Amy, you’re finally awake.”
He pulled her into a bone–crushing embrace.
Only when Michelle offered a glass of water did he release her. “Thank heavens you’re alright, Madam.”
“Mr. Davis knew you could swim, and the reservoir wasn’t deep. That’s why he sent you there.”
“Just to appease the Dowager. We never expected you’d faint.”
“Mr. Davis mentioned your fear of water. As someone who studied psychology, facing fears head–on is the best solu- tion.”
“Would you consider teaching young master Nathan to swim?”
“It could strengthen your bond while helping you overcome trauma.”
Walter nodded before Amy could respond. “Amy, you can’t keep running. Look ahead.”
“Have them dig up the backyard pool. Start lessons when Nathan recovers.”
Amy stayed silent, still trembling from the reservoir’s memory.

Michelle’s casual suggestion about bonding with Nathan had become Walter’s excuse to push her back into the very pool where her child drowned.
She pulled her hand from Walter’s grip and burrowed under the covers. “I need more rest.”
Walter sighed, impatience edging his voice. “This is for our family, Amy. I want us happy again–like when our Robert was with us.”
The door clicked shut. Under the quilt, Amy’s body shook with silent sobs. “But Walter… that world’s gone.”
For two days Amy lay bedridden while Nathan burned with fever. When his temperature kept spiking, the Dowager summoned an exorcist.
The mystic circled the manor before pointing his exorcism wand at the backyard pool, face grave. “A water demon haunts this house. Its curse emanates here.”
The Dowager paled, thrusting a thick lucky money envelope into his hands. “Save my grandson! He’s the Davis heir!”
Michelle dropped to her knees, kowtowing frantically. “Save the young master, I beg you!”

The exorcist pocketed the envelope unnoticed. “Dig up the cursed relic. Scatter its ashes at sea on an auspicious day.”
As the Dowager ordered the butler to arrange it, a raw cry cut through, “No!”
Amy emerged from the shadows, stepping toward the mystic. “That’s my child’s ashes–not some demon’s!”
The mystic stroked his beard, eyeing her dismissively. “Find another expert then.
“But heed my warning–the demon’s resentment grows daily. Soon even I won’t control it.”
The exorcist made to leave, when Mrs. Davis hastily stepped forward, shoving Amy Carter aside. “Do as you say.
“Butler, send someone to the cemetery to dig up the grave!”
Amy blocked the doorway, her frail body trembling but her spine ramrod straight. “Let’s see who dares!”
Her trembling gaze fixed on Walter Davis. “Victor, Robert isn’t a water demon. He’s our child!”
Walter hesitated. He’d never believed in supernatural tales. Had his mother not been sleepless with worry for days, he’d never have allowed this exorcist into his home.
Michelle Campbell, kneeling before the exorcist, suddenly pivoted. With a thud, she clutched Amy’s legs. “Madam, I beg you, save the young master.”
“He’s been feverish for two days. I know you dislike him, but he’s a living soul!”
“Young Master Robert will always be your and Mr. Davis’s precious child. But the dead cannot return. Could we pri- oritize Master Nathan now?”
“If his illness continues…”
Just then, a maid burst from Nathan Davis’s room. “The young master’s fever spiked again! He’s delirious, saying a little brother keeps trying to take him away!”
Mrs. Davis frantically rushed into the room, throwing a venomous glare at Amy.
“If anything happens to my grandson, I’ll have you and that ill–fated child of yours scattered to the winds!”
Michelle sobbed, clutching her chest as if about to faint. “Could that ‘little brother‘… be Young Master Robert?”
“Mr. Davis, I implore you, save Nathan.”
“He’s so young, just beginning to feel family warmth. For this life’s sake, please try. Save him.”
“It’s just a burial at sea for Young Master Robert. The exorcist said it will cleanse his lingering resentment, hasten his reincarnation. It’s karmic blessings…”
Amy clutched the doorframe to stay upright, her bloodied lip caught between teeth as she stared intensely at Walter’s face.
She gambled that a shred of remorse for their child, some lingering feeling for her… remained in his heart.

She lost.
Walter nodded.
Avoiding Amy’s scorching gaze, he addressed the exorcist.
“Let’s try it.”
