Chapter 14
That afternoon, I hesitated a long time outside the Sutton residence before finally going in. My mother, Maggie Sutton, greeted me with a smile.“Charlotte, you’re back.”
She looked past me, towards the door. Disappointment was clear on her face. I’d noticed it earlier. “There’s no need to look, only I have returned,” I said simply.
Maggie’s smile froze.
My father, Gustavo, came downstairs. Not seeing Jaxson, his face was displeased.“Didn’t I ask you to call Jaxson over?”
“He was busy.”
“What do you mean busy? That’s your husband! Which couple doesn’t argue at the head of the bed and at the end of the bed? You don’t even have the ability to ask your husband to come back and have a meal, are you a coward or not!”

After the wedding, the pressure started. They pressured me to get money from Jaxson, first for a bigger house and car for my brother, then to cover my father’s business losses. In their eyes, my brother mattered more. And I was just a means to access the Hamilton fortune.
“I’m really sorry about that,” I said, calmly. “I asked him for a divorce.”
At the word “divorce,” Gustavo’s face paled. He slapped me.
