Chapter 20
I accidentally glanced at the phone screen. It was Caroline.
He didn’t avoid.“What’s wrong?” His tone was completely different when speaking to me.
“Jaxson, Collin wasn’t feeling well and has been looking for you. I don’t know what to do. Can you… can you come over?”
“Okay, I’m going now.” He hung up.
My face tightened.
Seeing him leave, I blurted out anxiously, “Mr. Hamilton, you can consider my terms-
“We’ll talk about it another day.” He left.
Silence filled the room.
A sharp pain lingered in my chest.
I’d asked for his help, but Caroline’s call was enough to make him leave.

When Jaxson arrived, Collin was asleep, his small hand holding Jaxson’s.
Caroline entered with soup.
“Jaxson, I’m really sorry to trouble you, and to make you come over so late. I can see that Collin really likes you. How about you stay tonight?” She thought he’d stay for Collin.
He confirmed Collin was asleep, slowly withdrew his hand, and looked at Caroline.
“I will hire a babysitter for you to make it easier to take care of.”
Her face changed.“Jaxson, I didn’t mean that…”
He stood, his tone calm.
“Look, a single guy hanging around a widow and her kid–that’s just asking for trouble. Collin’s fever’s down now, so why don’t you both
some rest?”
Jaxson barely paused.
Caroline tightened her grip on the soup bowl, glaring at the child.“You are really useless!”
She slammed the door and left.
The little person on the bed, not actually asleep, slowly opened his eyes, red and tearful, curling up in the quilt.
He’d followed his mother’s instructions, taken a cold bath to get sick, so Uncle Jaxson would stay.
Why was Mom still unhappy?
