Chapter 21 The Encounter

Ronan had somehow opened his eyes, frowning at the woman ahead. Irritated, he muttered, “Don’t bother with it.”
But the next second, he noticed the dozen eggs Isla was carrying and froze.
She was walking home. Since it wasn’t far, she didn’t bother taking a taxi.
Unexpectedly, not long after she set off, a sleek black luxury car abruptly stopped. Through the window appeared a sharply chiseled profile and a cold voice. “Get in.”
Isla paused, rubbed her eyes, and stared at him in disbelief. “You?”
Ronan was taken aback by her casual attitude, and muttered helplessly, “Get in. I’ll take you home.”
“But-” she hesitated.
Isla looked at the luxury car, then at Ronan sitting inside, exuding that big shot aura. Ignoring the yellow safety helmet on his head-
Ronan’s gaze shifted slightly. “This is our boss’s car. It started raining just now, so he’s giving me a ride, right, Mr. Aldridge?”
David in the front nearly choked on his own words, twitching at the corners of his mouth as he agreed. “Exactly. Miss, get in. One ride or two, it’s all the same.”
Isla recognized David, too, and her surprise deepened. “It’s you?”
He really was Rowan’s construction site boss.
That explained things–after all, that house was a project the school had contracted out.
David smiled awkwardly, “Yes, what a coincidence. I didn’t expect to run into you again, Miss.”
“So, Mr. Aldridge, you were the one who took Rowan to the principal’s office that time?” said
Isla.
Isla had been wondering about this. She hadn’t misheard; she distinctly remembered the voice from the office sounded like Rowan’s.
David hesitated, then glanced at Ronan before speaking. “I apologize. I didn’t realize you knew each other. My assistant was stuck in traffic and couldn’t make it, and I happened to see Mr. Ellsworth dressed properly for an interview, so I asked him for help.”

“No wonder I heard your voice back then. I thought I was imagining things,” Isla said, glancing
at Rowan.
Rowan snorted coldly, saying nothing.
David chuckled, “Just get in the car.”
“Thanks.” Isla didn’t bother with pleasantries, carrying her eggs as she got in.
“Seems your boss treats you guys well. You’d better work hard in the future,” she whispered.
Ronan’s mouth twitched as he turned his head, refusing to respond.
The car quickly stopped in front of the apartment building. They got out.
David hurriedly drove off.
The two lived on the fifth floor–a walk–up building.
Isla carried the eggs, following Rowan. His walking looked fine normally, and his leg injury made stairs especially difficult.
Isla, drenched and slightly disheveled, trailed behind him. She noticed his legs and frowned slightly but said nothing, instead asking, “I thought you said you wouldn’t be coming back tonight?”
Ronan paused, snorting coldly without turning his head. “The boss thinks I did well. I helped him a lot, so he let me come back early.”
“Oh, I see,” Isla responded, then suddenly sneezed twice in quick succession.
Ronan glanced at her.
Today, Isla’s thin dress clung to her wet skin. She looked impossibly slender, yet her figure remained alluring.
Her makeup was slightly smeared, but under the haze of rain, her skin looked even more radiant.
Her long, wet lashes framed slightly lowered, captivating eyes.
Ronan’s gaze darkened, and his frown deepened. “Why didn’t you take a taxi back? Why get drenched like this and carry eggs? Are you trying to make me pity you?”
Isla looked at him, puzzled. “It wasn’t raining when I went to buy the eggs. I didn’t expect it to start. The place isn’t far–just seven or eight minutes. I thought I could just walk back.”

Ronan looked away. “Just two eggs. If this was to please me, there’s no need.”
“Why would I want to please you?” Isla asked innocently. “I just don’t like owing others.”
Ronan’s face darkened instantly.
Isla spoke slowly, yet somehow every word seemed to provoke him.

Ronan sneered, “So you weren’t leaving of your own accord. You deliberately stayed behind to use me, to take revenge on Aurora, didn’t you?”
Upon thinking of today’s events, his gaze on Isla grew even colder. “I thought you were smart. I was willing to cooperate whenever you decided to leave. I never expected you to use my situation to target Aurora.”
Isla’s smile faded slightly.
Rowan was so concerned about Aurora. He already knew what had happened today?
No wonder Rowan dressed up so sharply for the interview.
He must have known Aurora would be at the school today and prepared accordingly.
Otherwise, who at a construction site dresses like that for an interview?
Isla had already been puzzled, but now it all made sense.
