Chapter 25 The Embarrassment
“Go away.” Ronan’s voice was full of irritation and embarrassment.

Isla frowned. He was impossible to please. If she explained, it wasn’t right; if she didn’t, it wasn’t right, either.
She had clearly said she wasn’t interested, yet he seemed even angrier.
Men’s minds were a puzzle.
Late at night, Isla was awakened by a loud thud outside the door.
Light sleepers by nature, she stirred easily.
Opening her eyes, she faintly heard a muffled grunt.
Outside, the drizzle continued, the air heavy and damp.
She got up and walked out, turning on the light, only to see the man supporting himself against the wall, knees bent, collapsed on the floor.
“Rowan?” Isla exclaimed, rushing forward to help him.
His face was grim, and the moment she touched him, she felt his body tremble slightly.
How much pain must he be in to show an expression like that?
Before she could react further, he shoved her away, his voice icy and absolute. “Don’t touch me.”
Isla stumbled back a few steps, almost falling.
Under the light, Ronan’s face was pale as snow, eyes bloodshot, lips bluish, his expression a mix of restrained agony and fury.
“Your old injury flaring up because you were out in the rain this afternoon, isn’t it?” Isla said.
Facing this difficult man, Isla felt a little helpless. She knew that people with leg injuries suffered more in cold, rainy weather–today, he had been soaked, and dampness had seeped into his body.
Isla wasn’t sure if Ronan had come just to check on her, but he had indeed helped her.

She spoke as she entered the room to grab her phone. “Hold on. I’ll call an ambulance.”
Ronan’s voice, sharp as frost, stopped her. “I don’t need you doing anything extra.”
Isla froze, confused. “Why not?”

Ronan forced himself to stand through the pain, glaring at her with a look like a cornered, wounded beast. “It’s none of your business.”
Isla wanted to argue, but he was right. It wasn’t her business.
Yet, she was a doctor.
Seeing a patient in pain right in front of her, how could she ignore it?
She pressed her lips together and walked into the room.
Ronan let out a low growl, retracting his cold glare. Limping slightly, he moved to a nearby drawer, his fingers trembling as he reached for his painkillers.
The next moment, the medication was snatched from his hand.
Ronan paused, eyes meeting Isla’s stern gaze. “Too many painkillers will harm your stomach, and you haven’t eaten tonight.”
Ronan pressed his lips tightly together, a chilling glint flashing in his eyes. “I said, don’t meddle.”
A surge of anger rose in Isla’s gaze. “You’re so stubborn. If it weren’t for the fact that you helped me this afternoon, would I even bother with you?”
She reached out and pushed him toward the sofa.
Because of his leg injury, Ronan staggered and actually ended up sitting on the sofa.

darkened like a predator, filled with a terrifying intensity.
“What exactly are you trying to do?” he growled, staring at the woman in front of him. She was wearing a thin, silk nightgown, the fabric clinging to her skin as she moved. When she crouched, a hint of delicate skin peeked out.
Ronan’s breath caught.
The next second, he noticed the needles between her fingers, his pupils narrowing. “What are you doing?”
“Shut up.” Isla’s voice cut him off lightly.

Ronan froze, his face darkening further. Isla actually shouted at him.

A sharp pain suddenly shot through his leg. He looked down and saw that she had already rolled up his pants and inserted a needle into a point on his leg.
He was slightly surprised, then watched as her fingers moved rapidly, inserting several more needles into the acupoints along his leg.
The searing pain miraculously began to dissipate.
Ronan’s eyes widened in astonishment.
He was about to move, but she pressed him down, her fingers on his leg. The strong contrast of her touch against his skin made him instinctively look away, feeling a tingling warmth wherever she touched.
“This will only temporarily dispel the cold, but if you endure tonight, it should feel much better,” Isla said, her tone calm and professional, like a completely different person.
“You have bruising on your leg. Did you injure it again recently?” she asked.
Isla glanced at Ronan, and in his bewildered gaze, continued, “You’d better not go to the construction site. Go to a doctor as soon as possible; if you leave it untreated for too long, it could leave a permanent problem.”
“You could tell I was injured just by looking?” Ronan’s voice was incredulous.
Even a doctor would need X–rays to confirm such a thing.
And yet Isla had seen it immediately.
Isla met his eyes calmly. “I’m trained in medicine. Does that seem strange?”
She stood up and collected her box.
Ronan suddenly asked, “Can you fix it?”
Isla paused, standing with her back to him. The light cast shadows over her lowered eyelids as she said, “I’m sorry.”
