Chapter 6 The Four–Leaf Clover Necklace
Meeting his gaze, sharp as a blade, Isla felt her chest tighten slightly.

She had already researched Rowan’s background before, but that had been some time ago. knew he had a complicated history–but she hadn’t expected him to be such a dangerous man.
Could someone like him really have ended up living such a miserable life?
In the next moment, she understood.
The man stepped forward, but his gait was uneven–clearly disabled.
Right–she had heard about his car accident, how both his legs had been broken. Even if he had recovered, there would be permanent damage.
A cripple, yet here he was, facing the predatory relatives of his family, fighting for an inheritance.
Much like herself–a discarded, exploited outcast, used for whatever value remained in her, only to be cast aside once more.
In a way, they were kindred spirits.
His anger, therefore, was understandable.
Isla looked at him calmly.
The man in front of her was intimidating, but she was far from being unable to handle him.
Her voice remained light and composed. “As you can see.”
The words barely left her lips before her breath seemed to be gripped by an invisible hand, leaving her gasping.
Her fingers clenched slightly.
Ronan spoke coldly, his tone measured, as if trying to hide his discomfort. He had guessed that Isla had been caught in the Beaumont family’s scheme, but he didn’t blame her for it. “Leave. The person I want to marry isn’t you.”
Isla froze mid–motion, lifting her gaze to meet him. “What did you say?”
Ronan’s cold eyes narrowed. “I don’t know what your current situation is, but the one meant to marry me is Aurora.”

A faint, sarcastic smile curved Isla’s lips, carrying an almost imperceptible disdain. “Oh? Does she even fancy you?”
Ronan’s face instantly tightened, his deep eyes piercing her, cold enough to freeze the air itself.
Yet Isla remained unfazed.
If the Beaumont family had really fancied him, they wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to bring her back from abroad, orchestrating this entire scheme.
He might be devoted.
But the high–and–mighty eldest daughter of the Beaumont family–how could she care about his current condition?
A flicker of disgust crossed Ronan’s eyes. “Not leaving? You’ll regret it.”
Isla chuckled softly, “I’ve already had too many things to regret. What’s one more?
“They schemed to make me marry a cripple like you, and I haven’t even despised you yet–but you’ve already started despising me?”
She smiled coldly, “I just enjoy going against the current. The more you hate me, the less I’ll leave. The unhappier you are, the happier I am. What can you do about it?”
Ronan’s eyes revealed a rare trace of surprise. He furrowed his brow, studying her for a long moment, before finally speaking in a flat, emotionless tone, “Do as you wish.”
Seeing him about to leave, she called out, “Wait.”
Ronan turned back, impatience flashing in his eyes. “What is it?”
He was never fond of women who clung like this, unwilling to let go.
“Which room will I sleep in?” she said.
Ronan’s eyes darkened. This woman really intended to stay here?
After all that had happened, shouldn’t she be the most emotionally unstable?
Yet she remained calm, as if she had predicted the outcome all along–and that didn’t concern him. She would leave eventually.
Rowan lowered his gaze. “You may not enter the mentor bedroom. The rest is yours.”
A warning given, he turned and left.

As the man exited the small apartment, the air seemed to lighten.
Isla scanned the room. Not large, but clean.

Apparently, the Beaumont family hadn’t anticipated sending her here so quickly; she wasn’t prepared.
There were still two closed rooms, and beside them sat her suitcase. The Beaumont family had clearly left nothing to her freely.
Isla’s lips twisted into a sardonic smile as she walked over.
Her suitcase contained only a few clothes, but numerous unfamiliar instruments were packed inside.
Because the suitcase was locked with a password, no one in the Beaumont family had seen its
contents.
Isla stepped out of the apartment, scanning her surroundings. She was pleasantly surprised to find that the rental was very close to Cloudie University.
It was not bad at all.
Just as she walked a couple of steps, a woman from the neighboring apartment came out. Squinting at her, the woman seemed to recall something and offered some reassurance. “Are you Rowan’s girlfriend? I think I just heard you two arguing. Why isn’t Rowan with you? That boy is stubborn. Don’t take it to heart, little lady. Rowan may be cold at times, but he treats people well.”
Isla raised an eyebrow. He treated people well?
She hadn’t felt that at all.
When it wasn’t Aurora standing there, she remembered the anger and icy menace in the man’s
eyes.
She nodded lightly and smiled, “Thank you.”
Not far away, in a parked black car, the atmosphere inside was tense.
“Mr. Ellsworth, the Beaumont family is truly overstepping. Should I teach them a lesson?” said
David.
Ronan, seated in the back, kept a calm, unreadable expression, his deep eyes following Isla as she walked away.
“No need. Whatever happens, Aurora has always been indebted to me. If Isla behaves, there’s

no need to interfere. After all, the Ellsworth family still needs a scapegoat.”

Ronan’s voice was unnervingly calm. But David Aldridge, driving up front, felt an inexplicable chill run through him.
He knew Ronan would be furious if he encountered such a situation–but now wasn’t the time to burn bridges with his family.
Still, the question remained. What exactly was the Beaumont family thinking?
He hesitated before speaking, “Mr. Ellsworth, tonight your mom invited Miss Aurora Beaumont, who saved you, to the Ellsworth residence. Perhaps she intends to betroth Miss Aurora Beaumont to you.”
David’s eyes betrayed some complexity.
He had previously investigated. Ronan had a pending engagement with Aurora of the Beaumont family, but because the Beaumont family looked down on his status, they sent another, less favored daughter instead–just a token gesture.
Now, Ronan’s mother had noticed Aurora again and was planning to arrange her marriage to
Ronan.
The whole situation was dizzyingly convoluted.
Ronan narrowed his eyes. “How’s Aurora?”
He had once felt a faint favor toward her after she saved him, but Isla’s words had struck a
nerve.
David studied his expression, conflicted. “According to our investigation, Aurora is the Beaumont family’s daughter who was found five years ago–the Aurora related to Isla. She is gentle, kind, has a good reputation, excels in her studies, and is beloved by her parents. Truly an exceptional woman.”
To have saved Ronan under such critical circumstances, David also held a certain admiration for her.
And having seen her at the hospital before, although she wasn’t strikingly beautiful, her demeanor was calm and composed–suitable for the current heir.
Ronan leaned back slightly, rubbing a green four–leaf clover gemstone necklace between his fingers. He recalled that day–the woman’s back, the effort she had put into saving him—and his heart skipped a beat.
He couldn’t remember clearly, but when he woke, he had still been clutching the necklace tightly.

Placing the necklace into an exquisite box, he shifted the conversation, a cold edge in his tone. “How’s the progress on the car accident investigation?”
