Chapter 5

“The patient is fine. The sleeping pill dose wasn’t large. She should wake up soon.”

Only after the doctor’s confirmation did Andrew finally let out a slow breath.

His mind was still reeling.

Everything happened too fast. Seeing Kimberly lying motionless on the bed had genuinely terrified him.

After calming down for a long while, Andrew’s breath suddenly hitched.

He abruptly remembered Amanda, who’d also been forced to take sleeping pills, and a wave of regret washed over

him.

He’d been entirely focused on Kimberly when he left, completely forgetting about Amanda.

Andrew turned to look at the subordinates following him.

“Where’s Amanda?

Did you bring her to the hospital? Get a doctor to pump her stomach first. Consider this matter closed.”

The subordinates exchanged uneasy glances before stammering out their response.

“Andrew, you didn’t say to bring her to the hospital then… so we followed your instructions… Miss Davis is probably still there.”

Hearing their answer, Andrew’s face instantly drained of color.

Two hours had passed since Kimberly’s surgery ended.

The dose of sleeping pills he’d forced down her throat was easily enough to kill an adult within those two hours.

The thought made his steps falter. He shoved through the crowd.

He drove back to Kimberly’s apartment.

Andrew’s heart pounded violently the entire way.

It was too quiet. His phone showed no messages. Even his calls to Amanda went unanswered.

The door to Kimberly’s place was still slightly ajar.

The living room remained a scene of chaos.

Besides the empty sleeping pill bottle on the floor, there was no sign of anyone.

Gasping for breath, Andrew shouted repeatedly.

“Amanda?”

No response.

Where could someone who’d swallowed half a bottle of sleeping pills have gone?

Andrew froze on the spot. Every terrible possibility flooded his mind at once.

He rubbed his temples, hating himself for his momentary impulse, for being capable of such cruelty towards her.

After all, she was still his fiancée. Her parents had saved his life.

Andrew struggled to control his trembling breaths.

He picked up his phone to report her missing to the police.

But they told him they couldn’t file a report for a missing person under 48 hours. They advised him to keep looking.

Andrew shook with fury.

“A living person swallowed half a bottle of sleeping pills! She could be dead or alive right now, and you just sit there!”

He vented his frustration, but only when he calmed down did he realize:

This outcome was entirely his own doing.

Andrew collapsed onto the sofa, clasping his hands together, but they wouldn’t stop shaking.

Where could Amanda be? Was she alright? Would she ever come back…

Just as Andrew’s thoughts spiraled, news came from the hospital.

Kimberly had woken up. She was awake and demanding to see him.

Andrew returned to the hospital, his mind in turmoil.

He saw Kimberly was already out of bed.

She looked nothing like someone who’d just attempted suicide.

The moment Kimberly saw Andrew, she threw her arms tightly around him.

Her voice choked with tears.

“I still don’t want you to marry Amanda. Even if she threatened me, I’d rather die than see you marry her.”

“Andrew, let’s leave this place.”

Faced with Kimberly’s words, Andrew remained silent.

He put some distance between himself and Kimberly, asking under her bewildered gaze.

“Did Amanda really force you into this?”

Kimberly’s expression froze for an instant. She forced a smile, her lips twisting into something ugly.

“You don’t trust me?”

Andrew lowered his head, frustration washing over him. Just hearing Amanda’s name…

…made him feel like something was slipping away.

“Focus on getting better. No more suicide attempts.

“My marriage to Amanda was destined. For three years, I’ve hurt her repeatedly because of you.”

“I spent that month fulfilling your wishes. Let’s not contact each other again.”

Andrew dropped those words and hurried away.

Kimberly stood frozen, her outstretched hand trembling uncontrollably.
