Katie said with a fawning smile, “Mr. Strauss, she’s being so disrespectful to you. As a senior figure, you really should teach her some manners and show her there are people she can’t afford to mess with.”
Ergot’s hand slammed the table, his gaze suddenly turning razor–sharp. Everyone in the room froze in shock at the sudden
outburst.
Meanwhile, Katie’s eyelids twitched, and for some reason, she had a bad feeling.
Ergot’s lips curled in a mirthless, mocking smile. He said coldly, “So, you’re the daughter of the Lin family?”
Trembling, Katie stammered, “Y–yes, Mr. Strauss. I am.”
“Tch.” Ergot let out a cold, disdainful snort, his oppressive gaze pinning her in place. “Since you already said this is my turf,
who gave you the right to speak?”
Katie understood. He was mad at her for butting in earlier. Ergot was not someone she could afford to offend. If she angered him and brought trouble to her family, she’d surely get a beating when she got home.
Katie gulped and replied cautiously, “Mr. Strauss, I wouldn’t dare to offend you.
“I just thought she was being disrespectful to you and wanted to teach her some manners.” It sounded good on the surface, but really, she was just using him to get rid of someone she disliked, killing with a borrowed knife.
Ergot saw right through her transparent ploy and wasn’t buying it. “Who said it was your place to teach her a lesson?”
Katie clenched her fists anxiously. “It was my mistake. Please don’t be angry, Mr. Strauss.”
“You know you shouldn’t be apologizing to me,” Ergot said, his words full of implication. However, his meaning was clear.
Katie understood, but deep down, she was unwilling. ‘Why should I have to apologize to that bitch?‘
Katic fumed inwardly. ‘That bitch is just some small–time business owner. What special skills or influence does she even have? How dare she get Mr. Strauss’s favor?‘ The more Katie dwelt on it, the more furious she became.
Meanwhile, seeing Katie remain motionless, Ergot cleared his throat with a hint of menace. “Must I personally invite you to
hurry up?”
Clenching her fists, Katie reluctantly stood up and forced a smile. “My apologies, Ms. Lambert. I acted rashly just now and offended you. I wish to make amends.”
Ergot had just let Katie bully her, but now he was taking her side, clearly because he’d recognized her as one of the
Lamberts.
But Skylar had no intention of accepting this favor. She lowered her gaze to her wine glass, picked it up, and began twirling it pointedly, completely ignoring him.
Seeing this, Ergot snorted coldly at Katie. “Ms. Lin, is this how you show sincerity in your apology? How can anyone forgive you like this?”

Katie dug her nails into her palm, suppressing the pain as she forced a strained smile. “Mr. Strauss is right.”
She picked up a bottle. “It’s my fault. I should properly apologize to Ms. Lambert.”
“Bottoms up for me. Ms. Lambert may drink as she pleases.”

She tilted her head back and drained the entire bottle. Then she grabbed another, and then another. After several bottles, the alcohol began taking its toll. Her face flushed crimson, and her body swayed unsteadily.
Meanwhile, Skylar felt no pity for Katie. ‘She was just trying to force me to drink a moment ago,‘ Skylar thought coldly. ‘If
Mr. Ergot hadn’t realized I was one of the Lamberts, I would probably be passed out drunk by now. Who knows where
Katie might have dumped me, or what could have happened?‘
Skylar despised this kind of toxic business drinking culture. With a cold face, she slammed her glass down. “That’s
enough,” she said.
“I have other things to do, so I won’t be staying,” Skylar announced, rising to her feet. She nodded a brief goodbye and left without another glance.
People exchanged bewildered glances. None of them knew who Skylar was. They just assumed she was some upstart
entrepreneur with a fledgling company.
