Chapter 14
Zach’s face fell for a moment. Then, as if remembering something, he shot me a cold look.
“Serena, think carefully. Our companies aren’t on the same level. A percentage point doesn’t tell the whole story.”
Clearly, he was implying that Diana’s company was far weaker than his. At first, Diana’s company was indeed lagging behind, mainly due to technical shortcomings.
But now, the technology was gradually improving, and they even secured a multi–million–dollar project, making the company stronger than Zach’s. Moreover, I didn’t think Zach’s company would continue to grow under the current trends.
With his management style and obvious favoritism toward Hannah, problems were inevitable. I didn’t bother pointing this out–he wouldn’t listen anyway. Diana didn’t engage with him either.
“Has the driver arrived?” she asked me casually, ignoring Zach entirely.
I was about to check the order when a person in a driver uniform hurried over and asked, “Boss, I’m your hired driver. Where’s the car?”
“My car draws too much attention. Use yours,” Diana said, nodding toward me.
I handed the keys to the driver without a second thought. Within two minutes, she awkwardly drove the high–end Porsche up to us.
“Boss, this car is really flashy. Must’ve been expensive,” the driver said in awe.
I realized what she meant and glanced back. Hannah’s eyes were shining as she stared at the car. Zach looked thoughtful, his expression not particularly good.
Diana smiled smugly at me and said, “Not that expensive, just over two hundred grand. A company bonus.‘
“Oh,
and my friend here is still looking for a driver. You seem like a good fit. Interested? Twenty grand a month.”
The driver, thrilled, stammered, “Really?”
“Of course. If you don’t believe me, I can send the contract right now.”
}}
“Great! I promise to do my best!”
Diana chatted with the driver animatedly.
Zach shot me a cold glare and turned to leave, with Hannah following quickly behind him.
Meanwhile, Diana finalized the driver’s contract. I was a bit surprised. “You actually signed it?”
“Of course. We planned this. You’re our tech backbone. When we go out for business, drinking is inevitable, and we can’t always rely on taxi rides.”
“What about the salary? Isn’t it a bit high?“The pay was far above the market rate. At Zach’s company, my salary was only fifteen thousand.
Diana, anticipating my question, patted my shoulder. “Not too high. After all, when you’re drunk, the driver’s the one keeping you
safe.”
Seeing her had already made up her mind, I didn’t argue. Over the next period, we focused entirely on the project.
Occasionally, I noticed Zach, who had been posting constantly on social media, had gone quiet, and even Hannah seemed calmer, no longer provoking me. I guessed it was due to the previous confrontation with Diana.
had assumed that after this, Zach would give up and completely sever ties with me,
Yet, one day, while we were busily wrapping up project matters, Diana approached me mysteriously and said, “Zach just called me.”
