Chapter 23
“Are you satisfy now?“He looked at me, expression desolate.
Perhaps he still wanted to see a flicker of sorrow or nervousness,
or any
other emotion on my face.
But once again, I disappointed him. I had expected him to be with Hannah. I didn’t care about the state of his love life.
“Then why did you come here?” I asked, “Does your girlfriend know you’re out here drunk in the middle of the night? I can call her to come get you.”
Not wanting to cause trouble, I took out my phone, ready to call Hannah. But Zach, as if enraged, snatched the phone from my hand and threw it. It shattered with a loud crash.
“Do you really feel nothing?” he shouted, “Do you know I waited for you the entire night that day? You stood me up and to avoid me, you even flew abroad!”
He sneered, pointing at me and swaying slightly. “Serena, you’re such a liar.”
“I regret ever being with you. If I’d known how heartless you were, we would’ve broken up a long time ago.“His voice bordered on hysteria.
I worried that the neighbors might be disturbed, yet I also feared that closing the door would make things even harder to control.
Fortunately, Hannah arrived in a rush. She shot me a sharp glare, then meekly took Zach’s arm and coaxed, “Zach, you’ve drunk too much. Let me take you home, okay?”
At the sight of Hannah, Zach seemed to regain a shred of rationality. Slightly calmer, he shot me one last look before leaning on Hannah and slowly making his way down the stairs.
After that night, I rarely heard from Zach again. Hannah would sometimes post glimpses of their sweet life together, but the posts were often deleted within minutes. Soon after, her account went silent as well.
According to Diana, Zach’s company hadn’t been doing well recently.
Due to his neglect in management, some internal conflicts had arisen. Coupled with Hannah’s domineering behavior, a large number of employees resigned.
Zach had tried to stop the situation, but it was already too late.
Some of my former colleagues, the ones I’d been on good terms with, even reached out to me and Diana’s company. They had been key contributors to my former company. Diana and I, without prior discussion, welcomed them aboard.
Through them, I also learned about Zach’s private life. Apparently, he and Hannah argued frequently. Sometimes, these fights even occurred openly in the office.
At first, Hannah would act deferential and apologize. But after a few incidents, she grew bold enough to slam the table and quarrel with
Zach.
On one occasion, the argument escalated so much that Hannah tore up a proposal meant for a client, causing the company a loss of tens of thousands.
