Chapter 25
A flicker of surprise went through me. Before I could ask, Zach’s voice choked with emotion.
“I called a repairman, but they said it’s too late for service call. Serena, I know you don’t want to see me right now, but I really have no
other choice.”
“It’s too late, and I don’t know who else to turn to. I’m at my wit’s end. If you don’t help me, I might really…“His voice cracked. Desperation was clear in every word.
The cold sound of wind blew through the phone. I immediately sensed something was wrong. “Where are you right now?”
After a long pause, Zach replied, “The rooftop.”
I couldn’t help but recall the early days of our company. Back then, due to a bad decision, the company suffered a huge loss, and Zach had almost collapsed mentally.
One night, he had even written a suicide note and climbed onto the window ledge. Fortunately, I had noticed in time, otherwise the outcome would have been unimaginable.
I had thought he was rational enough, yet here he was doing something so reckless again.
If I hadn’t known, I wouldn’t have gone. But now that I knew he might be in danger, there was no way I could just stand by.
I sighed and said, “Wait for me.”
I quickly changed my clothes and drove back to this familiar place.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw Zach’s tear–stained eyes. The pipes in the room had burst, and the floor was covered in water.
I took off my shoes and stepped in. It turned out the connection was loose. With a few twists of my tools, the leak was fixed. “The waterproofing in this building is pretty good. Don’t worry about flooding downstairs. Just clean up the standing water.” After giving a few instructions, I turned to leave. But just two steps later, Zach suddenly wrapped me in his arms from behind. “Serena, you still care about me, don’t you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have come.”
“I’m sorry. It was my fault before. I know my mistakes now. Let’s go back to the way things were, okay?”
I froze for a moment and gently pulled away from him. “You’ve misunderstood. I’m not doing charity work. The repair costs one hundred.”
Zach looked at me, his thin lips trembling. After a long pause, he pulled out his phone and transferred ten thousand.
“You gave too much.“I returned the extra money to him and showed him, “See? Now it’s settled.”
“Settled.“He muttered my words to himself, finally giving a bitter smile.
I didn’t pay him any more attention and left the building. On the way out, I saw a stray cat. I went to a nearby supermarket, bought a piece of ham for it, and placed it in front of the cat. Then I drove home. Soon, I realized that Zach had let go as well.
A month after our project launched, I received a lawsuit from his company. The lawsuit accused me of stealing confidential company documents.
The evidence was comprehensive, not only paper documents and transaction records, but also a video. It was filmed on the day I went to fix the pipes at Zach’s place.
The footage had been edited, showing only me reaching for tools in the room.
Zach had taken it out of context, alleging that I had been rifling through his things for confidential documents.
