Chapter 1
When I saw the transfer order sending me to Miami, my entire body went numb in front of the computer.
Daniel and I had it all planned. I’d stay in marketing as his deputy-the path we’d been building for three
years.
There it was, right on my screen: I was being transferred to the Miami branch.
If I hadn’t checked in time, I would’ve had no chance to cancel it.
I called Daniel, hands trembling.
He answered casually, as if it was nothing.
‘Sophia said she was just playing a joke on you – wanted to see if you’d notice before the transfer deadline.”
Just cancel it. No big deal.”
gripped the phone tight. “You seriously think this is no big deal?”
Jesus, Emily, You’re being so dramatic again.”
He was starting to lose his patience. “Why are you making such a scene? Cancel it already. Sophie’s just being playful-can’t you take a joke?”
I stared at the screen, throat dry.
‘What if I hadn’t noticed? Sophie’s abusing her power-I could’ve reported her!”
‘Oh, for fuck’s sake!” His voice turned ice-cold. “Emily, I’m finding you more and more unreasonable!”
‘It was just a JOKE! You’re seriously going to report Sophie? Can’t you give her a break for once?”
He was getting worked up. “I’ve told you a million times! She just graduated, Emily, and has nobody looking out for her. I’m her mentor-what’s wrong with looking out for her a little?”
“Want to file a complaint? Go ahead-include me while you’re at it.”
Then the line went dead.
I froze.
Seven years of knowing each other. Five years together. He was supposed to be my boyfriend, my rock.
I remembered my rookie days-pulling all-nighters, nearly tanking a big client pitch. Daniel right there, tired-eyed but determined, helping me salvage it all.
That night at the company party, some drunk guy started harassing me and wouldn’t back off. Daniel grabbed his wrist-squeezed it until the guy yelped and begged for an apology. Then, he draped his coat over my shoulders like I was something precious.
Right there, voice low and full of care, he asked if I would be his girlfriend. So fierce when he protected me. So tender when it was just us.
Five years, and I’d already grown used to having him around. Everyone said we were perfect together. Total relationship goals.
We’d even talked about marriage. Everything should’ve been perfect.
Now my finger hovered over the cancel button. One click and this nightmare would disappear.
But all I could hear was his voice: “Just a joke.”
A heavy exhaustion surged up from deep inside me.
God, I was so tired of this shit
