Chapter 7

Paisley’s POV

“It’s like we get to live again, let our regrets die with the next generation,” he whispered.

I stared at him and set a copy of the miscarriage record in front of him. “Yet you were the one who killed our child.”

The miscarriage date was the same day he first brought up divorce. His bloody fingerprint marked the form.

“What is this-” he began.

“You think I went to the hospital that day to confront your little lover?” I closed my eyes. “No. That day, I already had signs of a threatened miscarriage. My body had recovered. That child was ours, and it was precious. But later that day, you shoved me, causing me to lose my baby.” Listening, Geoffrey’s brow tightened, but there was no shock, no guilt. He simply let the paper fall to the table as if it were nothing and said lightly, “Then let’s divorce and part on good terms. It’s best for both of us.”

But the butt of a gun struck his forehead. I wrested his pistol from him, twirled it, and held the barrel under his chin. I smiled through the blood on my face and said, “After all these years, and you still don’t know me? I already gave you your last chance. Between us, divorce is not an option, only death. Saying ‘best for us’ now is too late.”

His grip on my wrist trembled. The old wound in his shoulder weakened him. Gradually, he let go and then smiled, gentle and young again. “Fine. Kill me.”

The gun felt like it would be crushed in my hands.

I’d pushed him into a fight to get answers, to force him to explain why he’d betrayed me, to give me some reason that would make ten years make sense. I’d wanted a confession, however ugly. But instead, I learned that what could die between two people was not always mutual rage. It was when one was heartbroken, and the other would rather die than have any tie left with the

other.

And all of it was just for another woman, for a newcomer who had never bled for him.

I chambered a round.

Audrey’s cries threading under, I coldly said, “If that’s how it is, then I’ll do you this favor.”

“No! Geoffrey!” Audrey screamed.

But then, a shot rang out from behind. The bodyguard who’d been pointing a gun at Audrey crumpled, clutching his arm in agony.

Audrey’s face lit up. “It’s our reinforcements!”

Geoffrey had obviously wanted to give her a fairy-tale wedding as his men had spent hours setting up pink pavilions and decorations. Now, with new reinforcements arriving, both sides stood at each other’s throats. Backed by muscle, Audrey stood taller than before.

“You know why he wasn’t surprised by your miscarriage?” she taunted.

“Shut up!” Geoffrey roared suddenly, and Audrey clapped a hand over her mouth, hurt and indignant.

He then stopped his men from lunging at me and pressed a blood-soaked palm to his wound. Then he gave me a smile that felt like a spring breeze from our youth.

“Enough. Leave,” he said. “I promise, no one will stop you. When you go back, nothing we do will harm you.”

I focused on the truth under his promise. “So this is coercion, threatening me with force so you can have your wedding? Sorry, Mr. Dittman, I don’t have the bad habit of being cheated on.”

Just then, he sank to one knee as blood pooled beneath him. His men moved quickly and efficiently, disinfecting and dressing the wound, anxious that not another drop would be lost.
