Kendric was the youngest of the family, pampered from the cradle.
The only person he ever truly feared was his elder brother Cedric Holloway.
Evan Holloway, their grandfather, was stern, but age had softened him. He couldn’t help doting on
Kendric.
Cedric, however, was different.
When it came to disciplining Kendric, Cedric never held back.
Back when Cedric was still in America, Kendric and I had a brief stretch of peace.
Afraid of Cedric, he dared not step out of line.
But once the Holloway Group expanded and Cedric volunteered to take over the business overseas, that restraint was gone.
Kendric’s true nature surfaced.
He found me dull, turned instead to the radiant Juliette.
And he trampled on my dignity, and on our marriage, again and again.
Now, standing before Cedric, Kendric was nervous.
Cedric’s gaze was icy as he clasped my hand firmly.
“When the Holloway and Whitworth family arranged this marriage,” he said coldly, “I stepped aside only because I cared for Catriona too much.
“I kept those feelings to myself because I knew she liked you.
“I wanted her happiness more than I wanted her. But you… What did you do to her?”
Kendric’s lips trembled, but no words came.
Through nine years, his love and devotion were poured into Juliette.
What he left me was pain, humiliation, and tears.

I lowered my head. “Forget it. It’s all in the
past.
I didn’t want to waste time on someone who no longer mattered.
Cedric understood, nodding.
“I’ll take you home.
“I’ve met some doctors abroad. I’ll build you the best medical team. Once you’ve recovered, we’ll hold our wedding.”
I hugged the roses closer, giving a shy nod.
But the smallest movement was enough to pierce Kendric like a blade.
He trailed after us, unwilling to abandon.
“You can’t do this to me! Catriona is my wife. She loves me!”
“I once did,” I cut in, voice steady.
“But you betrayed that love.
“The engagement was between our family. It was never written that I must marry you.
“From now on, I’m Cedric’s wife. Show me the respect I deserve.”
There were years when his cruelty left me broken.
I could never understand how someone I loved could change completely.
In time, I learned the truth.
With my family weakened, Kendric looked down on me.
Kendric knew the engagement bound me, knew that no matter what he did, I would always beg him to come back.
So he hurt me without fear.
But Kendric forgot, he was not the only son of the Holloway family.
I had chosen him out of love, and now I could leave him for lack of it.
Kendric tried to reach for my hand, but Cedric’s cold stare drove him back.

Through the rearview mirror, I saw Kendric running after us.
Finally, he collapsed helplessly onto the pavement.
Cedric glanced sideways at me, a faint bite in his tone. “Do you feel sorry for him?”
I shook my head. Looking down at the scars that crisscrossed my body, a strange urge to weep welled
- up.
“If only you had come sooner.
“If only I’d known you loved me.”
If so, I wouldn’t have endured so long in a loveless marriage.
And I wouldn’t be covered in these wounds.
Cedric pressed his lips together, silent for a long moment.
Then, he said firmly, “Believe me. I’ll make up for the hurt you’ve suffered.
“From now on, I’ll be your strength.”
